Absence 4
The fading of the music that you’re hooked on changes your whole self
as when you’re raided by unnameable odors
that remind you of hospital corridors.
You’re a changed whole self when you see that you are here
although everything around you is a mirage
and those who see you, see a mirage only.
You’re whole self changes
with the alienation of the senses:
walk now as a stranger among beautiful women
and among their even more beautiful cars.
Walk, stranger, between two old women
who dream of a medicine to get themselves into hospital
where they can take their medicine.
Walk, stranger, to face the small look
Of the girl who is smaller than even a look.
And be a stranger in the strange place
As if you were that same strange place.
And be that stranger who memorizes passing faces
face by face
as if they were the rest of his family
who he can only start to care about
if the faces keep their truce with this new place
and be that stranger facing everything
as if your self were nothing.
