Als ik naar zee loop
kan ik twee kanten op
- uiteinden van een regel
leest ze langs haar wijsvinger mee
zie je, er staat best wel wat er staat
twee vingers en een duim strijken
als ik naar zee loop
het bergje in de handpalm
vingertoppen die zout afnemen
het net aangebraden vlees insmeren
ik moet het in de hand houden
als het uit een potje komt
kan ik het niet voelen
wijst ze de leesrichting
prikt in het vlees
als ik naar zee loop
kan ik twee kanten op
strijken mijn vingers
zeef ik de zee

When I walk towards the sea
I can go two ways
– ends of a line
traced by her index finger as she reads
a thumb and two fingers skim
as I walk towards the sea
the hillock in her palm
fingertips which pick up grains
rubbing into the meat just browned
I need to keep it in hand
if it’s straight out of the jar
I can't feel it
she points which way to read
pricks the meat
when I walk towards the sea
I can go two ways
my fingers skim
I sift the sea.
