herbe Lindas und Kätchen.

Die alte Tante isst meine Gaben,
dem Wolf bin ich diesmal nicht begegnet.
Zarte Blumen sind mein Spielzeug,

through a forest of all kinds of lust.

There I meet some nymphs and some gnomes,

young girls of indecent ways

as well as some stricter aromas -

stern ladies of former days.

Old auntie - she eats what I´ve brought,

and this time no Wolf comes around.

Fragile flowers reside in my thoughts,

and my love is a borderless ground.

ALL MY LIFE, I´VE WANTED OUT.

This, my love, is what nature´s about,

MIJN LEVEN LANG HEB IK WEGGEWILD
Wat dat voor mij betekent?
Daar alleen ben ik vol van,
het brengt me dichter bij het leven.

O wat is ons klimaat toch hard,
met al die nevel en kou.
Ik breng mijn tante een taart,
rennend over het bospad.

In het bos ontmoet ik nimfen, dwergen
en jonge lichtvoetige meisjes.
Maar er zijn ook scherpere geuren –
strenge Linda’s en Lili’s.

Mijn tante eet wat ik mee heb gebracht,
ik heb geen wolf ontmoet.
Ik houd niet van tere bloemen
en grenzeloos is mijn liefde.

MIJN LEVEN LANG HEB IK WEGGEWILD
Weet je wat dat betekent?
Het is een natuurwet, mijn liefste.
Die wijdt ons allen in.

Juhan Viiding (1948–1995) was a professional actor in the Estonian Drama Theatre, acting in several important roles (Peer Gynt, Hamlet etc), wrote film scripts, staged and played in films as well. And, he was one of the most important and most playful poets in the 20th century in Estonia, publishing his most well-known works under the pen-name Jüri Üdi. Jüri Üdi was the principal mould for poetic language for a whole generation; he revolutionised the language of Estonian poetry.

Juhan Viiding’s poetry was born of the conditions of historical injustice, stagnation of society and censorship. Allegory and reading between the lines are two keywords reading his poetry. He debuted semi-underground with The Song of a Realistic Angel (1968). In his lines – as well as on the stage – he was light, with lambent wit, radiant, at the same time painfully serious and tense, fighting for the personal freedom of everybody.

His expressive manner of reading and singing his poetry made him a living legend. He is the father of Elo Viiding, one of the most interesting poets of contemporary Estonia.
