Reinout Verbeke
Author

* 13.05.1981, Roeselare, Bélgica
Vive en: Nieuwerkerken (Aalst), Bélgica

Reinout Verbeke was born in Roeselare. He studied Germanic Philology at the University of Ghent and journalism at the Erasmus Institute in Brussels. He works as a science journalist and communicator for the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Brussels).

With the first poems he wrote at the age of 17 he won the Prize Anton van Wilderode in 1999 and  two years later the Interuniversity Poetry Prize of the literary magazine DW&B. Some of his poems were published in leading literary magazines and anthologies. In 2011 he made his debut with De achterkant van flatgebouwen (The backside of apartment buildings), which also contained a rock album, followed by Naar een vaderland (Onto a fatherland) in 2015, with a live session on dvd.

The poetry themes of Verbeke are fairly down-to-earth. He emphasises the somewhat animal-like, hidden raw side – the backside – of the human being from a darwinistic point of view and he does not hesitate to use imagery based on scientific terminology.

Verbeke does not sing but recites his poems on sometimes solid rockmusic. They become more accessible. It is poetry in the tradition of the troubadours, also as a form of entertainment, but with the music of these days. The live-performances of ‘Reinout met Nevenwerking’ (Reinout with After Effect), as the musical collective around the poet is called, aims at a total experience of wordart, live sound and adequate images via self-produced videoclips.

Verbeke performed as ‘Reinout met Nevenwerking’ on the stages of different cross-over festivals such as Crossing Border (The Hague), De Nachten (Antwerp), Flachlandfest (Berlin), Nacht van de Poëzie (Ghent) and Es Gracht! (Berlin).

Since 2007 Reinout Verbeke has been organising the Poetry Festival ‘Literaire Living’.
