Qassim Haddad was born on July 17, 1948 in Muharrak on the island of Bahrain.

Haddad is known for his political and social involvement. He was a very active member of the opposition during the independence movement in Bahrain. During the 1970s Haddad was an advocate for social changes and fought for social and political freedom and justice. Because of his political involvement Haddad has been sent to prison on numerous occasions from the beginning of the 1960s to 1980. On the whole he has spent five years in prison.

From 1968 to 1975 Haddad worked in the public library of his hometown and as a clerk for the Department of Education and for the Department of Information.

His first collection of poetry, Al-Bischara, was published in 1970. The poems reflect his political and social dedication and made Haddad known to a wider public.

Still living in Muharrak, Haddad regards himself as a public person whose duty it is to connect different groups of interest and to initiate an open cultural dialogue. Haddad is also the founder of many cultural institutions. He brought into being the Writer’s Association in 1969, the Awwal-Theatre in 1970 and in 1987 the journal Kalimat, which is published by the Writer’s Association. Furthermore, Haddad, together with colleagues from all parts of the Arabian world, initiated the internet platform www.jehat.com. It is supposed to offer an forum for the discussion of poetry, especially Arabian poetry.

Since 1970 Haddad has published over twenty collections of poetry. Besides essays he has also published many studies about the theatre in various magazines and journals.
