Karol Chmel was born in Zvolen in 1953. He studied at the Faculty of Arts, Comenius University, Bratislava (Andragogy). During his studies he switched a number of jobs and occupations (driver‘s mate, clerk, art therapist in a mental asylum, worker, tutor, editor, etc.), as well as locations (Zvolen, Praha, Turčianske Teplice, Bratislava).

Since 1989, he has worked as an editor in publishing houses (Smena, subsequently Kalligram) and magazines (Fragment, OS – Fórum občianskej spoločnosti). He published four books of poems: Máš, čo nemáš (Bratislava: Slovenský spisovateľ, 1985), Ovocnejší strom (Bratislava: Smena, 1989), Spray, modrá mentalita (Bratislava: F.R. & G., 1998) a O nástrojoch, náradí a iných veciach vypustených z ruky (Bratislava: Drewo a srd, 2004). Also he translated over 50 books from Polish, Serbian, Croatian and published over 400 translations in magazines and journals.
