Ivo Svetina (born in Ljubljana, 1948) graduated in comparative literature and literary theory from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Arts, and worked as a free-lance writer until 1978. He also worked in Pupilija Ferkverk Theatre and Pekarna Theatre, and in 1972 directed the Sumerian epic about Gilgamesh. Among the many jobs he had, he worked for TV Slovenia (stage manager and editor of arts and entertainment), the Slovenian Youth Theatre (stage manager and artistic director), the Ministry of Culture, and since 1998 he has been the director of the Slovenian Theatre Museum.

Svetina is the author of 19 books of poetry (the first was published in 1971) and a recipient of the Golden Bird Award (Botticelli, 1975) and the Prešeren Foundation Prize (Sung Manuscripts, 1987). In translation, his books have appeared in Reka (Botticelli, 1980), Belgrade (Selected Poems, 1981), and Mostar (Bulbul, 1991). The Italian translation of Botticelli came out in 1999. His poems have appeared in various anthologies in German, Italian, Spanish and English.

He wrote eleven plays for which he received the Slavko Grum Award on three separate occasions, for Billiards on Capria in 1987, Gardens and a Dove in 1992, and for Thus Died Zaratuštra in 1996.The play Scheherazade was one of the most acclaimed theatre productions of the Slovenian Youth Theatre in Slovenia at the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s and was staged widely across the world from the Soviet Union, Italy, Spain, to Mexico, Columbia, Venezuela, Brazil, and Argentina. He writes also fairy tales, essays and is the translator of the Tibetan Book of the Dead (1994) and Three Tibetan Mysteries (1998).
