Halyna Kruk (Галина Крук) was born on 30 November 1974 in Lviv, Ukraine. She is a poet, prose writer, translator, critic and literary scholar. She defended her dissertation on the subject of “Ukrainian low baroque: poetics of style and genre” in 2001 and now holds a professorship in literary studies at the University of Lviv. She specialises in medieval Ukrainian literature.

Kruk writes mainly poetry but also prose and poetry for children. Her texts have been published in various literary journals and have won awards in Ukraine and internationally. Already at the age of 22 she has won two prestigious literary competitions, the Ptyvitannia Zhyttia and the Granoslov. Her first two collections of poetry were published in 1997: Mandry u Poshukakh Domu (Journeys in Search of Home) and Slidy na Pisku (Footprints on Sand). In 2003 and 2010 she received a Gaude Polonia scholarship, awarded by the Polish Ministry of Culture, and in 2005 the HOMINES URBANI scholarship from Villa Decius in Krakow.

In 2003 she won the international "Step by Step" competition for children's literature. Her children's books Marko mandruje navkolo svitu (Marko travels around the world) and Vazhko buty najmenshym (The Littlest One) have been translated into 15 languages. She has collaborated with various other artists in audiovisual projects, including Songs of the Land of OS (with Y. Izdryk and the formation Cube) and Co(an)existence (with O. Khoroshko and R. Bardun).

Halyna Kruk is a translator from Polish, Russian and Belarusian (incl. Wisława Szymborska and Stanisław Lem). She is a member of the Ukrainian Writers' Union and was Vice-President of Ukrainian PEN.
