Cathal Ó Searcaigh was born in 1956 in an Irish speaking area of county Donegal.

He writes poems, haikus and he has also published several plays. He only writes in Irish and some of his work has been translated into English by other people. Much of his poetry is about the landscape near the small hill farm at the foot of the Mountain Errigal where he lives. His poetry has been described as Mozartian and his poems have a vulnerable and innocent note. He also writes about poems on his travels through Nepal (Seal i Neipeal). His collections of poetry include An Bealach ‘na Bhaile /Homecoming (1993); Na Buachaillí Bána (1995) and An Tnúth leis an tSolas (2001) for which he received 2001 the Irish Times Irish Literature Prize for the Irish language.
