ESSEN MIT DEN ELTERN
Kaum kauend ohne Hunger ohne Durst
Beinah ohne Absicht
Bloß aus Gewohnheit
Und jeder für sich
..............................................................
Was fragst du denn!
Beinah ohne Absicht
Bloß aus Gewohnheit
Und jeder für sich

A Meal with Parents
english
I try once more:
I talk about myself
But they hear badly
They do not listen
They talk talk
about both world wars
about illnesses diets
about the few surviving relatives
who want to have nothing to do with them
about holiday resorts
in which they can no longer drive
about the sudden death of a much younger acquaintance
about credit check books savings accounts
about politics
about the unbelievable corruption these days
about the approaching elections
to which they will surely not go
about weather
..............................................................
The cold makes them struggle hard the cold
that they still feel
and the obstinate demand for everything
the doctor has forbidden them:
fatty meat rich vegetables
fried potatoes beer wine:
all of which they swallow swill down
hardly chewing without hunger without thirst
almost without intention
just out of habit
And each of them alone
..............................................................
I know it does not suit them
the way I live now
They say they have nothing to say about it
they would hesitate to intervene in my life
But then they blurt out more questions
for years in unchanged tone and wording:
When will you finally go to the barber again?
How long will you remain abroad?
Can you really live from writing?
Have you ever thought about your pension?
But without waiting for an answer
she says to him with her mouth full:
Why do you ask?
You know he only lies to us
..............................................................
As they leave she slips me a banknote
folded small so he does not notice
On the street we say goodbye
The wind drives tears into our eyes
We shake each other's hands
We kiss each other on the cheek — quickly:
at twelve thirty there is news on the radio and the
weather report
I see them going
stiff legged on the icy pavement
They place one foot before the other
seeking hold on house walls and parked cars
with small frightened movements
almost without intention
just out of habit
And each of them alone

ELIS DREHT SICH
Dreht sich
Um sich selber
Regt
Die Arme schöner
Knie
Peitschen
Schwindel
Winden sich
In Muscheln
Bögen
Kreischen abwärts
Saitenquer
Elis dreht sich
Dreht sich
Auf der Zehen Spitzen
Regt
Die Arme schöner
Alles Sichtbare
Fällt ab
Das seit je
Verbundene
Zerfällt
Ruhe
Reglos in der Mitte
Der Bewegung
Elis dreht sich
Dreht sich
Um sich selber
Regt
Die Arme schöner
Drehen biegt
Die Gerte
Bricht
Blut
Quillt aus
Den Schäften

ELIS TWISTS
Twists
Around himself
Moves
His arms more finely
Knee
Whips
Dizziness
Writhes into
Knots
Curves
Screeche downward
Strung across
Elis twists
Twists
himself
On tiptoe
What was always
Fixed
Raises more finely
The arms
Everything visible
Falls away
Falls into decay
Calm
Stilled at the centre
Of movement
Elis twists
Twists
Around himself
Raises more finely
His arms
Twisting bends
The wand
Draws
Blood
Springs from
The shafts

TURNING CIRCLING WHIRLING
That is the loss
Of every connection
and the hills dance
Text is
Dance is
Music is
Expression of the innermost is
Play
and the beloved is a veil
with elements of
Any number of realities
Turning syllables Circling words Whirling sentences
Shadows
Projections
without
Borders
equal to the flute breaking into melodies

AUS DER EINSAMKEIT HERAUS
Nimmt er sich
Das Recht
Den Atem anzuhalten
Hat er
Seit dem ersten Schrei
Ein für alle Mal
Die Unwillkürlichkeit
Verweigert
Unter Elis’ Knie er
Sehnte Nähe Erdung
Weißes Wissen
Kresse
Wirft die Samenkörner aus
Zwischen Fingern funken
Schlägt Geruch von nassen
Nadeln
Rosmarin

OUT OF LONELINESS
He takes for himself
The right
To hold his breath
He has
Since his first scream
Once and for all
Rejected
The instinctive
Beneath Elis' knee he
Yearned for contact Grounding
White knowledge
Cress
Spreads seed grains around
Sparkling between fingers
The scent from wet
Needles
Rosemary

KNOSPENDER FROST
Auf der Stirn die
Leise blutet
Ein Bild
Eines von vielen
Mit andern gekreuzten
zerfließend verästelnd
An Rändern hinein
In Tiefen wo es
Atemverschlagend
An nie ins Auge
Gestochenen Stellen
Sprießt die Schichten
Eises sprengend
bevor es
Welk vor dem Aufgang
Der Blüte verblassend
Sich wieder zurücknimmt

FROST BUDDING
english
On his brow which
Bleeds quietly
A picture
One of many
Intersecting with others
Dissolving branching out
At the edges into
The depths where it
Breath-stoppingly
Sprouts in places
That never pricked
An eye the layers
Of ice breaking
before it
Takes itself back again
Limp before the ascent
Of the blossom
paling
SECHS POSTSKRIPTA AUS DUINO
german | Hans Raimund
1

Postscripts from Duino

1
Not many people to talk to here
The birds I miss
the hares too
Deer are never mentioned anymore
except on menus and roadsigns on the karst
2
Early in the morning the cockerels crow here too
And today a squirrel tumbled
black and ruffled from a tree
onto the asphalt at'my feet
3
Late one evening not long ago beneath a lemon moon
my dog and I watched a hedgehog
near a dustbin chewing paper scraps apathetically
while cats rattled inside
4
Water is abundant here
It frightens me
When the wind is right I smell it all the way home
5
And the Bora! All night
window shutters are clattering
In the morning they lie unhinged in the bushes
plaster crumbles away from the weathered walls
6
Last year's corn still occupies the land
rustling white and dusty in the wind
It is too late again
to burn down the fields
to make room for the new for this year's crop

BILANZ
german | Hans Raimund
Kaum einen Lidschlag lang
Der Frühling
Dein Frühling
Halten wir dir zugute
Du hast das Gespräch gesucht
Mit Bäumen Gräsern Steinen
- Die Scheu der Tiere schüchtert dich ein -
Du hast Fragen gestellt aber
Mit gewohnter Ungeduld
Die Antworten nicht abgewartet
Hast dich bereitwillig ablenken lassen
Vom Singen der elektrischen Drähte
Hoch über dir an gewaltigen Masten
Dein Ziel die Erreichung des Wasserturms
Jenseits der echostillen Doline
Hast du - kaum ins Auge gefaßt -
Im Nu aus den Augen verloren
Gewohnt gleichmütig
Dich mit der Weglosigkeit des Geländes abfindend
Die Brunnen vor den verfallenen Gehöften
Hast du erst zur Kenntnis genommen
Als deine Zunge schon raschelte
Deine Lider spröd sich spannten
Für das Blühen des Ginsters im Karst
Voll Ungeduld erwartet
Hast du kein Auge gehabt
Kein Ohr
Für das Getöse der Vögel
Im wetterschrägen Spalier der Olivenbäume
Keine Nase
Für den Rauch brennenden Unkrauts
Jäh aufsteigend
Aus eben gejäteten Gärten
Stumpfsinnig wie eh und je stehst du
Mitten im Sommer
Im Sommer der andern

Hardly the blink of an eye:
the spring
your spring –
Let us give you credit:
you sought conversation
with trees, grass, stones
— the suspicion of animals intimidates you
you posed questions, but,
with habitual impatience,
did not wait for answers;
willingly you were distracted
by the singing electric wires
high above you on tall poles.
Your goal: to reach the water tower
beyond the silently resonating canyon.
Having hardly focussed on it,
you immediately let it out of your sight;
despondent as usual,
you settled for the land without paths.
You took notice of
the fountains in front of farmsteads,
and not before your tongue was rustling,
your brittle eyelids strained.
You had no eyes
for the blooming of genista on chalkland,
so impatiently awaited,
no ear
for the racket of birds
in the rows of weather slanted olive trees,
no nose
for the smoke of burning weeds,
suddenly welling up
over newly hoed gardens —
Apathetically as ever,
you stand in the middle of summer,
the summer of others.
