[an auburn fox runs through the red forest...]

english

an auburn fox runs through the red forest, —
he lies mixed up with his gun,
in red autumn, in tilled chernozem,
not deep, —

and here the fox zigs back and forth
crossing the heart, the throat, the heart, —
it jumps, enters a paw inside the soul,
pulls it out, gives it a shake, and carries on
and he screams through his gapping mouth:

For Christ Sake Why! For What?

I didn’t have time — I’m almost blind, —
I didn’t have time — they, me, in April,
when everything was finished
when those like me — dressed in rags,
half blind, gimp, and without mustaches, —
trudge through the smells of Kinder, Kirche, Küche
through their green April red forest,
blood ran in my eyes, I could not see
and the red animal, and throat, and heart, and throat, —
I never fired
not a shot, —
                           For Fuck’s Sake Why?!

O Yeah?! Then Give Me Something, Give Me, Give Me, Give Me!!!

And here the fox falls down, lies still.

[The rock holds the paper...]

english

The rock holds the paper, while the scissors cut the hand and seal out of her.
Just a little more left.

The rock thinks: “Jesus, why did I want to be a doctor
Should have just stayed with mechanical mathematics.
Again, I feel nauseous and dizzy.
There’s still time I’ve got get out of here.”

The scissors think: “Christ, when will I finally get to smoke!
Maybe another doctor can sew her up?
Women these days, will lie under any seal,
as if they weren’t the ones to pay for it.”

The paper thinks,
it’s almost over, that she just has to wait a little longer,
and tries
not to scream.

ПОЛПАЧКИ GITANES

A PACK OF GITANES

english

1st cigarette

          the red Gypsy dress
is sewn according to the schema of the tomato metro
          in which
the sardines use the ring line

          without one transfer

2nd cigarette

at the end of the film Tabor Goes to Heaven
          all the main characters
          are caught in a rainstorm

          the wet sky squeals
          the Gypsy God’s voice
          painfully breaks

3rd cigarette

          the year nineteen forty-four

the extermination of the gypsies is coming to an end

something very wrong crawls in the dark
          under the European trench coat
          of lying nationality

4th cigarette

          Gypsies consider the lost homeland
          the island Tsi
          island no island
          Indian spoon
bent by a lover of tea
          in sugar water

5th cigarette

          the Council of People’s Commissars
          made a decree
“concerning the transfer of the peripatetic gypsies to
          a working and settled life”

          October 1, 1926
on the editorial page of local newspapers
printed horses trotted by the Gypsy men

...and then, walking past a construction site I gave the rest of the pack to a guest-worker

          the Moldavian workers
          hide from the policemen

          they’re not scared
it’s just a kind of game–
          sharpening their nationality
          to the point
          that it begins to crumble
          on Moscow’s uniforms

The pack still contained: a cigarette with a Polish director Andrzej Wajda, whose last name from the Gypsy is translated as “boss”; a cigarette with a picture of eleven Gypsies, who during WWII received Hero of the Soviet Union medals; a cigarette with mustalaiset (that is what the Finnish call their Gypsies); a cigarette with Japan: the only country in the world without Gypsies; and a cigarette with the marvelous male name: Dufunya.

BARBIE’S TENDER CLOTHING

english

*

under her dress
you can sometimes
find the woman
who later causes
girls
to kiss the soft paws
of toy Soviet gynecologists

          *

the latest Barbie
is made of such tender plastic
her underwear
leaves a mark
that is
of course
if for a prolonged time
the doll sits uncomfortably on the lap of a stranger

          *

inside this woman
is that
for which
the policemen of small American cities
get paid

          *

in the complete Barbie set
is a tiny object
the use of which
is not obvious

when you finally figure out
what it’s for
the doll
suddenly
grabs the object
from your hands

          *

she never came to me
in a dream
however
those 1970’s Soviet dolls did
with their honest
innocuous fingers
always grown together

Tender May

english

Suddenly the tender May became the most bitter holiday
Dust turns in the somnolent air
Is vinegar really a better treat than blood
But I’ve already forgotten this taste

You like a poor gypsy child
kiss the hand touching the earth
in the shadows of wet banners
we lit the memorial sun

A lit paper boat
sinks in the cloud of the hot heavens
tender May or glassy October
we bury our brides today

House. From Beneath the Table.

english

Like a sweet tree
passing over a sleigh
everything seems to be on tiptoe
and viands for piglets
or does it smell of camphor
or are they slashing open pillows
and the backwards windows
sun falling into stomach

I feel sick they opened vinegar
the voices muffled in the noise
but what’s more embarrassing than a bite
where the flea jumps a stitch is moved
they are pulling
that sleigh and paint something
and bless the dream while the skin peels
a whale for a cheap tabernacle

and the fat priest stands in his kiosk
smelling of honey fish wax
and the girl’s button nose spins
spins in her freckled face
there is an English pipe under the table
and angels sit around the heavens
as they chat but they aren’t rude
awaiting death obediently

dad and I lift up our heads
this is our school
we run home down the stairs...
and from the blood
our big eyes open, I am big
but we are shy
after all our blood drips on the boards
here we are with a busted lip
take out a cigarette
we can even smile
eyes closed tight like gold
