VERSUCH ÜBERS WEINTRINKEN
german | Robert Schindel
Still ist der Wein
Der vor mir im Kelch
Sich kräuselt denn ihm graut
Dass ich ihn alsogleich
In meine räudige Gurgel schütte
Unten ist er und die Sekundenzeiger
Auf den Uhrtürmen der Welt bleiben stehn
Wolkenformationen fetzen durch mich
Nehmen meine Wortseele in ihr Zentrum
Und regnen sie ins abgeschiedene Tal

A Study in Wine-Drinking
english
Before me, the wine
is quietly shaking
in its goblet, afraid
that I will pour it
down my scabby throat.
And down it goes! Now all the second hands
on all the clock towers in the world
stop. Thunderheads blast through me
taking my poems into their nucleii
to rain them down on the valley of the lost.

PECHBLENDE
german | Robert Schindel
Und während draußen ununterbrochen
Gebrochenes einherschüttelt bis es
Türen zuwerfend und Luster schwingend
Ins Zentrum des bangen Herzens hereinbröckelt
Ziehen die bodenlosen, die Wolkengauner dahin
Verziehen der Natur deren Antlitz zur Tagesgrimasse
Mögen hinter den Zwergen, den Seen verschwinden
So dass Dunkelheit wie die Zipfelmütze
Und Kälte wie die Müdigkeit einer
Großen Gemeinde sich über das Beben,
Das krampfige Land legt. Stare entfliegen.

Pitchblende
english
And while the outside world rattles
with endless rubble, juddering until,
slamming doors and knocking chandeliers,
it crumples into the core of trembling heart,
the unbounded pests of the sky flit by,
twisting the face of Nature into a diurnal grimace,
and then they vanish, perhaps, behind the gnomes, the lakes,
so that the darkness, like a long night cap,
and the frost, like the collective fatigue
of a sprawling community, settles over the tremors
of the spastic landscape. And starlings take flight.

DUMME LIEBE 2
german | Robert Schindel
Einerlei gefletschtes Innesein
Das schwimmt, das hält sich
Am Ununterbrochenen fest
Du. Mein gemaserter Sinn
Du, marmorgekörpertes Scheinen
Ich. Eingesperrt in der Aussenheit
Schicke mein Wort. Schicke und schicke
Audio production: 2007, Literaturwerkstatt Berlin
Foolish Love 2
english
The same old inner-life unsheathed,
adrift, holding fast
to what remains unbroken.
You. My variegated reason.
You, glimmering body of marble.
I, locked within my outer-life,
send word to you. I send and send

ALONG WITH ME: Black [Like a widow made mute]
english
Like a widow made mute, I clothe myself in black to better feel my way to black, reducing the distance between us. I put on black not only to understand the other but also to be understood as the other. It demands concentration and sustained effort. Black will never let you get close to it. It refuses both seduction and protection.

ALONG WITH ME: Black [Black repels the illusions]
english
Black repels the illusions we use to deaden the pangs of our loneliness, when the pangs of our loneliness become too sharp. On the other side of black there is nothing else but another black. I cannot bring myself to black, because black brings me face-to-face with myself.

ALONG WITH ME: Black [The hand snatches the pencil]
english
The hand snatches the pencil and it’s off! Gone the page, gone the virgin surface, gone the void. There is no shape, no note, no trace that can withstand such an outpouring of graphite. Words get swallowed up in the mass of it. The tip scratches and scratches and scratches. It pours out the black blood of speech enraged by silence.

ALONG WITH ME: Black [I’ve never been able to bring myself to black]
english
I’ve never been able to bring myself to black, since
black takes up so many surfaces of the world. It
appears in front as it shifts to the rear; it spreads
to the left while it infiltrates the south. Black is an
island whose centre one can never leave.

ALONG WITH ME: Black [In black’s heart]
english
In black’s heart, the hope of light, black perhaps, within the black, and it keeps me present. There is a shimmer of heat, however small, that changes course and joins me in my descent, step by step by step.

GESCHICHTSZAUBER
german | Robert Schindel
Wenn wir mit all unseren Gliedmaßen nach
Weimar fahren im Mai, dann kostet das was
Dann kostet das was
Zahlt jemand vorher schon, was er nachher erleidet
Zahlt vorher schon nachher

Historical Sorcery
english
With all of our limbs intact, we will travel
to Weimar in May, but it’ll cost us something.
It’ll cost us something.
Weimar looks like a brainy town right out of the box,
where legends are common as farts, and there are bone-grinders nearby.
There are bone-grinders nearby.
Going there by rail
one must pay in advance for the suffering to come.
One must pay in advance for the suffering.
Why stay in Birkenau instead of going to Weimar?
Eat at The Elefant instead of dropping from the clouds like shit.
It’ll cost something for sure, but it sure is something.
