The End of the Biography, 96.

english

O, boxes speaking without their mother, what are you yattering about?
Man, why did you crawl out the train window onto the roof?
In excitement the head smacks against the bottom,
Like an Ippon and Vasari, in the Chaplin club tighten your sashes.

I enter. I crawled onto the screen lamp. It sets up another little bench
Everyone looks down, one guy curses very loudly, but he’s understood
Whose the important one here, a deep pit, I say hello to you,
Mama and my sisters, grandma is returning from Africa and Japan,

Having passed through a supersonic threshold of a killer bed where,
She died, and a distant voice wafted through hospital dreams
And in the secret sea channel of the messy room
It read, it looked, it waited, it knew, it called.

The first and last names of the one who thought all this up and planned it
That same woman you and I don’t know who works in the document office wrote it down,
But this is not even Misha, not even Tisha, with his mouth agape,
And not even you, who reads about the sport of murder.

We don’t believe that all this could have happened, a total failure if it’s true
Well, even if one-third of it took place, May 9, January 21, build the second
Story, from which with leg raised upward you saddled
First the classroom, then the large room, then 1942, and Troy.

Who is barking there? Pigs? No, a little piglet, a meat carcass,
We fell as victims, Vladimir the Orphan and Natalia the Widow
[NB: plays on the names of Russian actors Vladimir Sirota and Natalia Vdovina]
and Kustodiev’s peasant woman
With a tomahawk at Moscow — America and Japan, so that Saint George,
Ivanov-Petrov the dragoman didn’t exist.

I sold the teapot, the knife switch, the alarm clock and the refrigerator, said Uncle Vasia,
Kiriushov the gym teacher play a march, your brother Koshorailo died,
The plague is celebrating its name-day for a week, but Kov is on the baluster,
The cub-scouts are playing baseball, my sisters are Vira and Maina.

You left the tree-lined boulevard, the whistle of soldiers’ belts of the opera and ballet,
1968, reshaping the street, the fight of the masses, Lenin square, the blackness of heads,
Darkness approaching, Sokovnin, necks beaten in the earth from a square meter
A head sticks out, Tibullus the cabbage, Bakhtin, Soton into the forehead.

A wristwatch for the cub-scout, wounded while on guard, and you will lie down during the third,
A watchman, a boy, an apple tree, a church, fly right into the house Chekalda,
The nineties, a glider and a fissure, Krasnoiarsk, the movie house, in a carriage,
a mortar and minaret,
Andrei is behind you, you didn’t know at Obrubok, at Poker, where and when?

Dina, Dasha, Natasha, and you all know, in a column,
He left, but his Doppelgänger, will stand, not heroically, but to the death.
Do you really not see? A soldier and a ballerina, I said, six of one, half a dozen of the other,
You should know that Christ will not answer for this unrestrained drunkenness.
