SUN IN AN EMPTY ROOM, 1963

En aquest dormitori buit de mobles
i impol•lut se situa l’acció.

Després i sense a penes adonar-te’n

Amb tot, jo no vaig allunyar-me gaire.
Arreu on vagis, mai no s’ha trobat
la porta de sortida al laberint.

SUN IN AN EMPTY ROOM, 1963

In this bedroom devoid of furniture
and unpolluted the action is set.
It is filled with sunlight admitted
by the window and my footsteps resound
as if someone were walking with me.
I stand up straight, my eyes intent
on something (on what is clearly
unimportant). Floating in the nuptial
glow of afternoon (the sun already waning)
I noted the presence of a shadow,
a pulse, a breath. It’s just me:
tending to be invisible,
I rediscover myself and leave a sign.

The bareness of this space, cut straight
down by the light that comes delineated
from outside, is the bareness of life.

Which is strange. If you had
seen it before, with the torches of desire
ablaze so many times, the hopes
and dreams, the satisfactions
and chiaroscuro of captivating people…
Later, without your noticing the pain,
life gets bogged down by deaf ears,
the highs and lows, monotony.
Suddenly, they evict you, or you leave,
and the new landlady is emptiness.

All the same, I’m not moving very far.
No matter where you go, you never find
the way out of the labyrinth.

SUN IN AN EMPTY ROOM, 1963

atentos a alguna cosa (no importa, claro,
a qué). Flotando en la claridad
nupcial de la tarde (ya anochece)
he notado la presencia de una sombra,
un latido, un respiro. Soy yo mismo

SUN IN AN EMPTY ROOM, 1963

attenti a qualcosa (è indifferente,
ovvio, a cosa). Fluttuando nella luce
nuziale del vespro (è già l'imbrunire)
ho notato la presenza di un'ombra,
un battito, un respiro. Sono io stesso
che tendendo all'invisibilità,

Poi, accorgendotene appena,

SUN IN A EMPTY ROOM, 1963

atentius a quicòm (a qué,
aquò rai, de segur). Flotant dins la claror
nupciala de la tantossada (avèspra, ja)
ai remarcat la preséncia d’una ombra
un batèc, una respiracion. Soi ieu meteis
que, tendent a l’invisibilitat,
me retròbi e d’aiçò ne fau constància.

Malgrat tot, ieu me n’alonhèri pas gaire.

In the words of the poet and critic Àlex Susanna, “Farrés is the type of author who is quite atypical, who has made himself unhurriedly but with an admirable stubbornness, steering entirely clear both of stardom and the prevailing gregarious spirit. […] The tone of his poems is as prosaic as that of a novel, because it shies away from lyrical incandescence and endeavours to adapt to the prose of life. His gain will have consisted precisely of being able to produce a high level of output on working days – and its sporadic counterpoints – that shape and misshape the life of ordinary people, whether painted or written.”
