STAIRWAY, 1949

i, després d’haver tastat el bo i dolent,
i inspireu-me, filles de Zeus i Mnemòsine,
muses gregues, aclariu-me què cal fer

no em deixeu tirat i encomaneu-me el nervi
per copsar les meravelles de la vida.
Ara baixaré les escales que donen
a l’exterior i no penso defraudar.

STAIRWAY, 1949

aqueste, talament insondable, semblar clar.

STAIRWAY, 1949

What a crappy poet I’d be if I scammed
and after sampling the really nasty bits
didn’t feel up making my deposition.
Because this could happen, don’t go halfway,
daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, inspire
in me a poetry that doesn’t concede
the benefit if the doubt, that scrapes together
profound thoughts and enables this our world,
so inscrutable, to seem transparent.
That like a key in a lock can open doors
to a quickening wind as well as the laundry room.
That like an expansive wave extends its reach
o’er hill and dale.
Megalomaniac
Greek muses, clarify what must be done
so as to fix in incontrovertible words
the aesthetic principle of landscapes
and days with dawns and dusks
and nights with moons and penumbras
and, even so, the spectacle of the populace
and urban areas in disarray
and the sorcery of modern societies.

Instead of watching television
or standing around with your hands in your pockets,
don’t abandon my plan and give me the nerve
to grasp the wonders of life.
Now I’ll descend the stairs that lead outside
and not worry about letting anybody down.

STAIRWAY, 1949

tan inescrutable, parezca claro.

STAIRWAY, 1949

Che razza di scrittore sarò se fuggo
e, dopo aver saggiato il bene e il male,
non ho il cuore di darne testimonianza?
Se possibile, via i mezzi termini
e datemi, figlie di Zeus e Mnemosine,
una poesia che non dispensi
il beneficio del dubbio, che raccolga
pensieri profondi e faccia che il mondo,
così inescrutabile, appaia chiaro.
Che, come una chiave, dischiuda le porte
all'aria vivificante, agli echi.
Che, come un'onda espansiva, si sparga
fino ai burroni attorno ai colli.
Megalomani
muse greche, dite cosa devo fare

Ernest Farrés is a journalist and writer. He works for the cultural supplement of La Vanguardia newspaper. He is the author of six volumes of poetry in Catalan: Clavar-ne una al mall i l’altra a l’enclusa (1996), Mosquits (1998), Edward Hopper (2006), Els efectes imprevisibles dels camps magnètics (2011), Blitzkrieg (2011) and Los Angeles (2015). Edward Hopper constitutes a sequence of poems based on the pictorial work of this renowned artist, which has garnered various awards, including the Robert Fagles Prize for the best translation of contemporary poetry into English (to the translator Lawrence Venuti, 2008). He has edited a reference anthology for young Catalan poets: 21 poetes del xxi (21 Poets of the 21st Century, 2001).

In the words of the poet and critic Àlex Susanna, “Farrés is the type of author who is quite atypical, who has made himself unhurriedly but with an admirable stubbornness, steering entirely clear both of stardom and the prevailing gregarious spirit. […] The tone of his poems is as prosaic as that of a novel, because it shies away from lyrical incandescence and endeavours to adapt to the prose of life. His gain will have consisted precisely of being able to produce a high level of output on working days – and its sporadic counterpoints – that shape and misshape the life of ordinary people, whether painted or written.”
