Soledat oberta

Em dol tot, fins la camisa,
a damunt el pit cremat.
I les paraules em nafren
quan sonen damunt la llengua
amb el seu significat.

No puc parlar de tant que estim… La parla
és sempre de baladres i sal grossa:
un agre ganivet que em reboteix
bavant-me sal i sang, i sal i sang,
pel meu bosquet senzill de parla verda…

I no vull tanta parla que s’esquerda.
Mes, les meves paraules de «bellveure»,
«taronja», «llimonera», «estrella», «amic»,
les tenc, obscures, fent una plorada
al carreró banyat de la Gran Pena.

Em dol la blancor dels ossos.
Em dol el bel de la sang.

Aquest carreró de sang,
per on ningú no passa, i tot pas hi ressona.

Per la meva sang sona
la frescor de la font
que lluu cap a les set.

I els pins… —so dels meus pins!—

«estrella», «ala», «llimonera», «sal»,

i no pot esser torre…

És curiós…, però jo no tenc pena.
És ver que ja fa temps no he vist estrelles,

d’eixa ona meva, repetida i blava.

Tots els que anau contents:
el sol i el meu cor van amb vosaltres.

Welcome solitude

Everything aches, even the shirt

resting on this burnt chest.

Words wound me

as they sound off the tongue

with their intent.

I cannot speak such lov… Words

are meant for bushes and coarse salt:

a stinging knife that swells in me

frothing in salt and blood, and blood and salt,

around my simple thicket of verdant words…

I have no want for such brittle words.

Mine, my own language made of burning bush,

orange, lemon tree, star, friend,

belongs to me, shaded words, weeping

on the road bathed in our Great Shame.

The whiteness of my bones pains me.

The bloody shroud pains me.

This blood-covered road,

on which no one walks as every step echoes.

In my blood it rushes,

the freshness of the fount

which glistens at the strike of seven.

And the pines… - oh the sound of my pines! –

bringing their lush foliage,

as the day brings its reddest dawn,

unaffected by the most fervent of greenery.

My cheek quivers in my suffering,

as my pain burgeons in me

like a wing takes to flight, or the mountain to the sublime.

It was law that God should bite me

when I my head appeared in His loving light,

already baptised in the colour of brimstone.

A genet leaped from my blood,

and love, the size of my body,

was riddled in red tooth marks,

like the red footmarks at a murder scene.

A weasel was sucking me dry

in the garden of my heart,

the melody of a nightingale’s throat,

when the day was dawning. – That is to say, it was already singing.

Yet one day, so bright the sun was! - Such brightness! –

and these words soared out of my throat:

star, wing, lemon tree, salt, cloud, son, mother, rose, fresh, water.

Oh, voice! Oh, song!

From His bite, God left saliva behind

in the wound and the freshness of His great lips.

His saliva flooded my blood.

And a voice full of nests was born to me.

Love made me as large as God’s presence.

Thirst made me as large as God’s presence.

The founts continued with their quiet streaming

as large as a dove.

Love, thirst, grew

higher and higher, like the midday,

containing their rage like a lashing of Juniper branches.

I am stretched out like a land

who is consoled by water and stone

but can never be a tower…

Curious… but I am no longer ashamed.

It is true I have not seen stars for many a night,

nor that simplest of seas that strokes the beach

replete in blue lilies, hushed and alone.

It is true. There is little to be glad about.

But there is always the offshoot of an orange

that creeps in silence back to its tree.

And humble stones, which, for the first time,

feel angelic as they fly towards fruit,

or a bird that had the fortune

to die in flight.

Curious… I am brine,

and yet at the heart of this little

wave of mine there is sugarcane, repeated and blue.

All of you who live content:

the sun and my heart go with you.

* 10.12.1926, Santanyí, Spain
† 01.12.1997, Santanyí, Spain

Blai Bonet was born into a humble family in Santanyí in 1926. At the age of ten, he entered the Catholic seminary of Palma, where he became acquainted with the Classics, Philosophy, and the Humanities. A lung illness caused him to abandon his ecclesiastical career and marked all his subsequent work. During his stay in the Caubet sanatorium, he started to write his novel The Sea, which had a deep impact when it appeared. His first poetry also dates from these early years. He died in his home town of Santanyí in December 1997, after some years of isolation from all literary circles.

The work of Bonet (poetry and novel) is very much associated with light and colour. Light, as a metaphor of God, and colour, as the passions of light (Goethe): hence, poetry as the colour that gives character to life. Bonet once said that “my intention when I write is to illuminate those who read me”. Bonet’s work is also a meditation on God and human life, and offers a certain prophetic vision within the current of Christian existentialism. In regard to this relationship between God and man, Bonet also reflects on sin and its epitome, Judas, a recurrent figure in his poetic and novelistic universe. The poet, according to Bonet, explains the world through synthesis and, as a repository of Art, is called on to dispel darkness from mystery.
