«Mon langage ne changera pas»

Spirales, coquillages sensés éloigner
le malocchio; yeux de nacre trouvés
dans la Méditerranée par les pêcheurs

superstitieux; comme toi je me suis arraché
les yeux et les ai jetés à la mer-en vain;

C’était quelques jours après le solstice
d’hiver, j’étais prisonnière du noir et de
l’enfer, tendons noués, jambes sciées
autour du cou, étrangère. Je me fondais

dans une colère sourde avec une odeur
de coquille ouverte.

Spiralen, Muscheln, die den bösen
Blick abwenden sollen; Perlmuttaugen,
von abergläubischen Fischern

im Mittelmeer gefunden; wie du habe ich mir
die Augen ausgerissen und ins Meer geworfen – vergebens.

Es war ein paar Tage nach der Wintersonnen-
wende, ich war gefangen in Schwarz und
Hölle, verknotete Sehnen, abgetrennte Beine
Rings um den Hals, Fremde. Ich zerfloss

in einer dumpfen Wut die nach
offener Muschel duftete.

d’inverno, io ero prigioniera del buio e
dell’inferno, tendini annodati, gambe segate
intorno al collo, estraniata. Mi scioglievo

in una collera sorda con un odore
di conchiglia aperta.

Carole David

lives in: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Carole David was born in Montreal in 1954. She is a poet, novelist and short story writer. David holds a doctorate in French Studies. For many years, she taught at the Vieux-Montréal College. She has published criticism and fiction in several journals. From 1985 to 1987, she also contributed a column about cultural periodicals for the Montreal daily Le Devoir. A member of the editorial board for the journal Spirale from 1980 to 1982 and Estuaire from 1993 to 1996, she was also a reader for the publisher VLB Éditeur from 1979 to 1988.

David was a member of the Committee on Commercial Practices in Book Publishing (1999-2000) as a representative of the Quebec Writers’ Union. She was president of the Public Lending Right Commission from 2004 to 2006. In May 2008, she was the first writer to take part in the new “Writers in Residence”-program set up by the Montreal Arts Council, in collaboration with the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville and the Quebec Writers Union. She set up shop at the Ahuntsic library.
