Poesia és una mena de mecànica...
A la meva dona

Rustically solemn or in rustic laughter
Lifting heavy feet in clumsy shoes.

T.S. Eliot, East Coker

Poesia és una mena de mecànica
de mots, de drings, de sons,
barreig del silenci
i a la vegada

un i una, la femella i el mascle,
reproductors en consorci, xorcs per separat.

La resta és conxorxa.
El riure, si és plural
ni el mar ni el freu no el faran seu.

Poésie is een soort van mechanica...
Aan mijn echtgenote

Rustically solemn or in rustic laughter
Lifting heavy feet in clumsy shoes.

T.S. Eliot, East Coker.

terwijl men passen telt, gebaar afmeet,
hij als zij, mannetjes- en wijfjesdier,
één in teelzucht, maar ontbonden dor.

De rest is baatzucht.
Zelfs als meervoud wordt de lach
door zee noch engte als eigen erkend.

Poetry is a sort of Mechanics...
To my wife

Rustically solemn or in rustic laughter
Lifting heavy feet in clumsy shoes.

T.S. Eliot, East Coker

Poetry is a sort of mechanics
of words, echoes, songs,
blend of silence
and at the same time
a pithy dance of myths,
words and myths hand in hand
as for a very suitable sacrament.

Feet up, feet down,
in a deadly fight against bustle,
like balls which,
whether in the cold or in the heat,
must rebound precisely
not as the master of the ball wishes
but with the greater rigour imposed by music.

Original and hardly, without wanting to put a feather in his cap,
over the mud or over dust traps,
over the ashes of innumerable knucklebones
still full of the urge to crack loudly,
be the weather good or bad,
be the weather cruel or faithful.

As for a happy marriage
a little peace and
leisure time are needed, as well as a bit of luck at dice,
a pinch of salt and a sprinkle of art,
to dance this dance well,
counting the steps, measuring the gesture,
the one and the other are requested: female and male,
reproducers when together, sterile if separate.

The rest is but intrigue.
Neither the sea nor the strait will be able
to make laughter theirs, if plural.

Translated by Estelle Henry-Bossonney

Poezia e un fel de mecanică...
Soţiei mele

Rustically solemn or in rustic laughter
Lifting heavy feet in clumsy shoes.

T.S. Eliot, East Coker.

Poezia e un fel de mecanică
a cuvintelor, a clinchetelor, a sunetelor,
jefuire a tăcerii

Restul e complot.
Râsul, dacă e împărtăşit.
Nici marea nici pământul nu şi-l vor însuşi.

Poesía es una especie de mecànica...
A mi mujer

Rustically solemn or in rustic laughter
Lifting heavy feet in clumsy shoes.

T.S. Eliot, East Coker.

A disciple of Blai Bonet and Bartomeu Rosselló-Pòrcel, he was a member of Llorenç Villalonga’s literary circle that met in the Cafè Riskal in Palma in the 1950s, although he is essentially a solitary poet who has developed his work outside the aesthetic trends of the day.

In 1999, he published the anthology Tot jo és una exageració (Quaranta-nou textos orals perifèrics) [I Am All Exaggeration (Forty-nine Peripheral Oral Texts)], and began to assemble his complete poetic oeuvre in Camps de marina i suburbials:

obra poètica 1 (Marine and Suburban Fields: Poetic Work 1, 2000),

Cròniques bàrbares: obra poètica 2 (Barbarian Chronicles: Poetic Work 2, 1999) and Canalla lluny de Grècia: obra poètica 3 (Scoundrel Far from Greece: Poetic Work 3, 2001).

“For Fiol, the limits are in literature itself, and syntagmas and their sequence do not ever make us have a dream or figure out a request that is so effective that it makes the Madonnas or angels act, recurring pretexts of an incomplete hope. In the limits, however, he defends the inscrutable, notwithstanding the difficulty of combat. The lethargy for the difficulties of language is expressed in the parody and humour of some Baroque-like plays on language, ever on the border of modernity and the vast legacy of tradition.” Susanna Rafart
