Der Hase und das Land

Ein grauer Hase steht
reglos
die Hinterpfoten fest auf einen Fleck
Erde gepflanzt
die Vorderpfoten schwer herabhängend
die beiden Ohren
in die Luft gereckt wie aus Gummi

Ich mag das Land nicht,
denkt der Hase.
Nachts rührt er sich nicht.
Und die Luft ist blau.
Ach, ich mag das Land nicht mehr.
Tags rührt er sich nicht.
Die Luft ist weiß.

Man hat ihn verhext, meint er.
Sowas von reglos!
So zu stehen, ganz stumm,
als lauschte er ewig ins Tal …
Er sieht keine Bäume
doch es muss irgendwo welche geben.
Aber er mag die Bäume nicht mehr.

Nein, ich mag das Land nicht mehr -
diese Zeit
ist vorbei …
denkt der Hase mit den Glasknöpfen
in den Augenhöhlen
die Erde unter den Pfoten ist Dekoration.
(Sollte er ausgestopft sein?)

Sie bedeckt ihn nicht, diese Erde. Er steht nur darauf.

The Hare and the Countryside

A grey hare standing erect,
motionless,
his hind legs fixed in a patch of
earth,
his front ones hanging down heavily
his two ears
stretching upward like elastic.

“I’m not fond of the country,”
thinks the hare.
At night he doesn’t move.
And the air is blue.
“Ah, I’m no longer fond of the country.”
In daytime he doesn’t move.
The air is white.

Someone’s put a spell on me, he thinks.
Such inertness!
Just standing there mute,
as though perpetually listening to the vale…
He sees no trees –
although there must me some around.
But he is no longer fond of trees.

“No, I’m not a country lover anymore –  gone
are those
days,” thought
this beady-eyed
hare,
the earth beneath his feet as decoration.
(Is he stuffed?)

this earth doesn’t cover him. He’s standing on it

Le lièvres et la campagne

Un lièvre gris debout
immobile
les pattes arrière accrochés à
la terre,
les pattes avant pendantes, lourdes,
ses deux oreilles —
tendues au vent tels des élastiques

«Je n'aime pas la campagne»,
se dit le lièvre.
La nuit il ne bouge pas.
Et le vent est bleu.
«Ah, je n'aime plus la campagne.»
Le jour il ne bouge pas.
Le vent est blanc.

Quelqu'un l'a envoûté, pense-t-il.
Une telle fixité !
Rester planté ainsi, muet,
écoutant perpétuellement la vallée...
Il ne voit pas d'arbres
mais ils doivent exister quelque part, non loin.
Mais lui n'aime plus les arbres

«Non, je n'aime plus la campagne —
elle est finie l'époque où
je l'aimais...»
se dit le lièvre avec des billes
dans le trou des yeux,
et sous ses pieds — décorative — la terre.
(Est-il empaillé ?)

Cette terre ne le couvre pas. Il marche dessus.

Trente-trois, 2003.

Without apparent roots in contemporary Greek poetry Vassilis Amanatidis is connected with those works of literature which submit their grammar to the immense territory of the imagination. By combining phonetics, dramaturgy and narrative he creates, with particular care for structural composition, works that elude the usual divisions of genres and which aim to awaken the spirit and the senses of the reader.
