THE NOTTALE (FUNERAL)

The great labour of appearance
served the making of the pyre.
But how
nor how
How also
how they
shal nat be toold
shall not be told.
Nor how the gods
nor how the beestes and the birds
nor how the ground agast
Nor how the fire
first with straw
and then with drye
and then with grene
and then with gold
and then.
Now how a site is laid like this.
Nor what
nor how
nor how
nor what she spak, nor what was her desire
Nor what jewels
when the fire
Nor how some threw their
and some their
and their
and cups full of wine and milk
and blood
into the fyr
into the fire
Nor how three times
and three times with
and three times how
and how that
Nor how
nor how
nor how
nor who
I cannot tell
nor can I say
but shortly to the point
I turn
and give my tale an end.

Die Erzählung des Nimmer (Bestattung)

Lang war die Arbeit und die Mühe
bis aufgerichtet war das fiur.
Doch wie
noch wie
Wie auch
wie sie
næher zu erzellen underblîbe
näher zu erzählen unterbleibe
Noch wo die Götter
noch wo die Vögel und Gethier
noch wie der Waldesgrund mit Schrecken
Noch wie das Feuer
erst mit Stroh
und dann mit trucken
und dann mit grüene
und dann mit golt
und dann.
Noch wie a zîth darin gelegt.
Noch was
noch wie
noch wie
noch was sie gesprochen noch geschrien im Wahn
Noch was an Edelsteinen
wie sich die Flammen
Noch wie sie warfen ihr
und manche ihr
und ihre
und becherweise Wein und Milch
und Blut
ins fewer
in das Feuer
Noch wie dreimal dann
und dreimal mit
und dreimal wie
und wie diese
Noch wie
noch wie
noch wie
noch wer
Das zu erzählen ist nicht meine Sache
Auch meld' ich nicht
doch rasch zum Schlusse
kehre ich um
das lang Erzählte numehr kurz zu enden.

* 30.09.1962, Hamburg, Germany
lives in: London, United Kingdom

Caroline Bergvall (born in Hamburg in 1962 of French and Norwegian parents) is one of the most highly-regarded contemporary conceptual poets. Her mutlilingual works, often created in collaboration with other artists, blur the boundaries between poetry, installation, performance and translation. Poet Charles Bernstein has described her work as a feast for the eyes, the ears and the mind. In books such as Drift or Meddle Englishshe explores the fault lines between different languages and the fractures in the stages of development within a single language. Her texts experiment with cut-up and fold-in techniques and draw on such different artists as Chaucer, Marcel Proust, Unica Zürn and Dante Alighieri.
Bergvall was the Director of Performance Writing at Darlington College of Arts, and also taught at the University of Cardiff and at Bard College. He work has been shown in such venues as the Museum of Modern Art, the Serpentine Galleries and the Tate Modern. She has lived in the UK since 1989.
