Kitsch Postcards

Australia's Australia.
Australia is.      I am
an Australian.   I am.
Is.        an Australian.

Lucky, sunburnt, kangaroo, koala, wombat.
Young, possible, Sydney Tower, Kmart, satellite.
Tough, courageous, Gallipoli, pioneer, the land.
Easy going, carefree, beach, sun. Future

pacing the edges of,
maps, souvenirs,
an order, undecaying, of
ownership, sense and law.

space, youth, gold. sea.

the cities are gutted,
there's edible sky,
and pieces of Luv,
great chunks of it.

pioneers and their noble savagery.
their picturesque slaughters.
their beautiful photography.

Backs to desert, eyes to sea.
A witness to my visibility.

suns flare in the navels of the sunburnt.
Europe, New York and north west gravity.

the sky empties,
moves into ice like an
archaeologist and its pet dinosaur,
bright furious blue.

the white.
the rock at the lip of coast.
the white.
with backs turning, eyes to the desert.

Ansichtskartenkitsch

Australien  is  Australien.
Australien ist.       Ich bin
Australierin.    Ich bin.
Ist.                Australierin.

Glücklich, sonnenverbrannt, Känguru, Koala, Wombat.
Jung, möglich, Sydney Tower, Kmart, Satellit.
Hart, mutig, Gallipoli, Pionier, das Land.
Umgänglich, sorglos, Strand, Sonne. Zukunft,

ihren Grat abschreiten,
Landkarten, Mitbringsel,
ein Beschluß, unvergänglich, über
Eigentum, Verstand und Gesetz.

Raum. Jugend. Gold. Meer.

die Städte ausgeweidet,
genießbarer Himmel,
und hier und da Liebe,
in riesigen Klumpen.

Pioniere und ihre edle Grausamkeit.
Ihre malerischen Metzeleien.
Ihre wundervollen Fotografien.

Wüste im Rücken, Blicke aufs Meer.
Ein Zeuge meiner Sichtbarkeit.

Sonnen lodern in den Nabeln der Sonnenverbrannten.
Europa, New York und nordwestliche Schwerkraft.

der Himmel leert sich,
schleicht sich ins Eis wie ein
Archäologe mit seinem Lieblingsdino,
strahlend ungestümes Blau.

das Weiß.
der Felsen am Rande der Küste.
das Weiß.
jetzt im Rücken, Blick in die Wüste.

* 26.11.1959, Sydney, Australia
lives in: , Australia

Amanda Stewart is a Sydney based poet. Since the late 1970's she has created a variety of poetic texts, performances, radio, film and multi-media works in Australia, Japan, the US and Europe. From 1983 - 1993 she was a radio producer at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and in 1990 co-wrote and directed the award winning film Eclipse of the Man-Made Sun.

In 1989 she co-founded the Australian text-sound ensemble MACHINE FOR MAKING SENSE who she continues to collaborate with as well as with the Amsterdam/Sydney trio ALLOS which she co-founded in 1995.

She currently works as a freelance writer/performer. Between 1995 and 2001 she completed twelve performance tours of Europe and her opera with composer Colin Bright, The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior was staged on Sydney harbour as part of the 1997 Sydney Festival and then in 1999 adapted and produced for ABC Radio.

Recently, Amanda has been exploring disjunctions between oral, graphic and electronic forms of inscription in her poetry and vocal works. In 2000 she was commissioned to produce two new pieces for the Bayerische Rundfunk which she performed in Munich in April 2001 and in solo concerts in France and Belgium.

Her CD/Book set of selected poems I/T was a finalist in the National Digital Media Awards and won the 1999 Anne Elder Poetry Prize at the National Literary Awards, Australia. It is available from SPLIT RECORDS.
