* 01.01.1953, Woerden, Netherlands
lives in: Arnhem, Netherlands
Jaap Blonk was born in Woerden, Holland in 1953. His studies of physics, mathematics, and musicology, as well as various activities in offices and other linear systems, reinforced his penchant for Dadaism. With the recitation of poetry (Artaud, Lucebert, Schwitters, et al.), the self-taught musician, sound poet, and vocal performer discovered the immediacy and flexibility of vocal expression. He specializes in the performance of sound poetry and is distinguished by his powerful stage presence and unbridled freedom of improvisation. He has performed in many European countries, as well as in the U.S. and Canada, Indonesia, Japan, South Africa and Latin America. Blonk's work for radio and television includes several commissioned radio plays. He also makes larger-scale drawings of his scores, which are being exhibited.
