Nem sokat utazott.
Ott volt neki Trouville, a tengerpart Normandiában.
A strand. Ahol az emberek strandolni szoktak.
Boudin is kiment, kivitte az embereit a strandra.
De nem strandolni.
Kivitte őket föl-alá sétálni: Járkáljatok!
Nem törődött a homokkal. Hogy majd
homok megy a cipőjükbe, a ruhájukba.
Nem törődött a kifogásaikkal.
Két lépésnél nagyobb távolságot tartott; ilyen volt.
De mindig szép, elegáns ruhákat adott rájuk,
krinolin szoknyát, kalapot, pelerint, szalagokat.
A férfiaknak sétapálcát nyomott a kezébe,
az érzékeny bőrű nőknek napernyőt.
Rendszerint székeket is vitt ki a partra,
letette őket egy kupacba,
és leültette a fáradékonyakat.
Azok rögtön leültek, bámészkodni, beszélgetni.
Boudint nem érdekelte, miről beszélgetnek.
Nyilván érdektelen semmiségekről, gondolta,
és talán igaza volt. Úgy 1863-64-ben.
Egyszer két fekete ruhás kisasszony és egy fiatalember
leültek a homokba. Csak úgy.
Máskor a szél belekapott egy türkizkék kendőbe.
Vagy vihar jött, ólomszürke lett az ég.
A sétálások egyre ritkultak, rövidültek.
Boudin hagyta. Hagyta az egy helyben topogást.
Sőt, nagyon is megfelelt neki így.
Néha egy zászlóval vagy szalaggal jelezte a szelet.

65-ben is kivonultak bámulni a naplementét.
Ücsörögtek, ácsorogtak egy kupacban.
Nem történt semmi különös.
Várakoztak.
Boudin kicsi képeket festett (35x57cm, ilyesmik),
és a kép fele, kétharmada mindig ég volt.
Messze volt még a világháború.
Boudin küszködött, szeretett volna jobb képeket festeni.
Egy 1867-es képen délután ülnek kinn a tengerparton,
Trouville-ben, természetesen.
A csoda tudja miért, de valahogy szörnyen magányosak.
Mint akiket száműztek ide a partra, a szép ruhájukban.
Kijöttek ide, de innen aztán már nincs hova,
innen már sehova. És hamarosan beesteledik.
A száműzöttek pedig csak ücsörögnek, ácsorognak,
csöndesen, jól nevelten.
Még a kutya se ugat, csak néz.
És hiába, hogy egy csoportot alkotnak,
és hiába az álló nők,
aki itt csírázó terveket szimatol, az téved.
Aki azt hiszi, hogy majd megijednek, téved.
Majd felállnak, akik ülnek,
és leülnek, akik állnak; ez elképzelhető.
És nézik tovább a tengert, mint egy moziban a mozit.

Boudin szerette őket, biztos, a maga módján,
de Boudin elment,
elment az antwerpeni kikötőbe,
Brüsszelbe, Velencébe,
elment egy mezőt festeni tehenekkel,
a szomorú Dubois családot a teraszán,
elment Boudin, és ha visszajön is,
csak egy piros napernyőért jön vissza,
amire egy sirály rápöttyintett egy E-t:
E. Boudin, strandfestő.
Boudin egyébként sohase festett sirályokat,
mindig csak az ő száműzött hölgyeit és urait,
ahogy ücsörögnek, ácsorognak, sétálnak,
vagy úgy tesznek, mint akik sétálni indulnak,
de ugyan hová is mehetnének? Hová?
Boudin viszont elment, és nem jön vissza,
nem jön vissza azért a piros napernyőért se,
ami inkább narancssárga és makulátlan,
nincs rajta egyetlen sirálypötty se.
És csak ücsörögnek és ácsorognak a Trouville-i strandon,
hamarosan beesteledik,
és megkapaszkodnak a kalapjukban,
nekivetik hátukat a széktámlának,
és néznek maguk elé rendületlenül
az anyák, a lányok, a testvérek, az unokatestvérek,
a férjek, a fiúk, az apák, a nagyapák.

Tulajdonképpen mivel érdemelték ki ezt a szerepet?
Mi volt a bűnük? Mert hogy semmi, az nem lehet,
azt még ők maguk se állítanák. De hogy mi?
Nézik a naplementét, és ha valakiben felmerülne,
hogy Boudin elfeledkezett róluk, hogy netalántán
magukra hagyta őket, és hogy meg kéne gondolni,
Boudin már meggondolta. Már megfestette az eget,
alatta a partot, a tengert, s a csoportot a parton.
És talán nem adott a kezükbe sétapálcát?
Talán nem adott a lábukra cipőt?
Nem, Boudint nem lehet hibáztatni.
A székek is stabilak.
Hát akkor jól van.
Valami értelme biztos van ennek.
Hát hogyne! Hát persze!
Valaki elmosolyodik. Valaki biccent.

Eugène Boudin, Beach Painter

He didn't travel much.
Trouville was there for him, the beach in Normandy.
The beach, where people cavorted.
Boudin went there too, he took his subjects to the beach.
But not to bathe. He took them
for a stroll along the beach: Move!, he said.
He didn't care about the sand – that the sand
would get into their shoes, their clothes.
He didn't care about their objections.
He kept more than two steps' distance; he was that way.
But he always dressed them in pretty, elegant clothes,
crinoline skirts, hats, capes, ribbons.
He slipped walking-sticks into the men's hands,
parasols for the women with sensitive skin.
Usually he also took some chairs to the beach,
stacked them in a pile,
and made the easily tired sit down.
They immediately sat down, staring, chatting.
Boudin didn't care what they chatted about.
Obviously some uninteresting trifle, he thought,
and maybe he was right. It was around 1863-64.
Once two ladies in black and a young man
sat down in the sand, just like that.
Another time the wind lifted a turquoise-blue scarf.
Or a storm came, turning the sky lead-grey.
Walks grew shorter and more rare.
Boudin let them be. He let them mark time.
It suited him better this way.
Sometimes he suggested wind with a flag or a ribbon.

They walked out in '65 too, to watch the sunset.
They were sitting and standing around, clustered in groups.
Nothing special happened.
They were waiting.
Boudin painted small paintings (12 x 15 inches, or so),
and half or two-third of the painting was always sky.
The World War was still far off,
Boudin struggled, wanted to paint better paintings.
In an 1867 painting they are sitting on the beach
in the afternoon, in Trouville, of course.
God knows why, but they're awfully lonely, as if
they'd been exiled here, to the beach, in their pretty dresses.
They came out here, but from here there's nowhere,
nowhere from here. And soon night falls.


And the exiles just sit and stand around,
quiet, well-mannered.
Even the dog doesn't bark, he just stares.
And in vain they form a group,
and in vain the standing women.
If you smell plans budding, you're mistaken.
If you think they'll be scared, you're mistaken too.
They'll stand up, who are sitting now,
and those who are standing now will then sit down;
this is conceivable. And they keep watching the sea,
as if they were watching a movie.

Boudin sure loved them, in his own way,
But Boudin left,
left for Antwerp,
for Brussels, for Venice,
he left to paint a meadow with cows,
the sad Dubois family on their terrace,
Boudin left, and even if he returns,
he will return for a red parasol,
onto which a seagull has let fly the letter "E":

Boudin never painted seagulls, by the way,
only his exiled ladies and gentlemen,
sitting around, standing around, walking around,
or pretending to start on a walk,
but where in the world could they go? Where?
Boudin left, and he's not coming back,
he's not coming back even for that red parasol,
which is, rather, immaculately orange,
not even a single seagull dropping on it.
And they are just sitting and standing around on the beach at Trouville,
soon the night falls,
and they hold onto their hats,
straighten their backs against the backs of the chairs,
and stare relentlessly ahead,
the mothers, the daughters, the siblings, the cousins,
the husbands, the sons, the fathers, the grandfathers.

What have they done to deserve such roles?
What crime did they commit? It couldn't have been none,
even they themselves wouldn't say so. But what?
They are watching the sunset, and if anyone supposes
that Boudin had forgotten them, that he had by any chance
forsaken them, they should think it over,
Boudin had thought it over. He had painted the sky,
the beach, the sea and the group on the beach below.
Hadn't he slipped walking sticks into their hands?
Hadn't he put shoes on their feet?
No, Boudin can't be blamed.
The chairs are stable.
It's all right.
This must make some sense.
Oh sure! Of course!
Someone is smiling. Someone is nodding his head.

Poet and translator Péter Kántor was born in 1949 in Budapest and lived there, near the Danube. He earned a degree in Russian and English Literature from Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in 1973, and a degree in Hungarian Literature in 1980.

He worked as a teacher in high schools and as a lector for Európa Kiadó (Európa Publisher). During the 80’s he was a prose editor (together with Ottó Orbán) of the literary monthly Kortárs (Contemporary), and between 1997‒2000 a poetry editor of the literary weekly Élet és Irodalom (Life and Literature). Since 2000 he was been a freelance writer. He translated English, American and Russian prose and poetry.

His first volume of poetry Kavics (Pebble) appeared in 1976, then he published another sixteen books of poems and a book of feuilletons with the title Egy kötéltáncos feljegyzéseiből (Notes of a rope-dancer). He has received numerous prizes and awards; in 1991 he spent a year in New York on a Fulbright Fellowship, and in 1999 he got the Soros Lifetime Achievement Award. He has read his poems at poetry festivals throughout the world including Prague, Toronto, Malmö and Jerusalem. A volume of his poems in English, Unknown Places, with translations by Michael Blumenthal was published in New York in 2010. In 2017 he published his poems Valahol itt (Somewhere here) at Magvető Publishing. As greeting his 70th birthday Magvető published an illustrated edition of his poems based on paintings Jég-öröm (Ice-Joy) in 2019. He could just approved last volume of his poems, Elegendő ok (Sufficient Reason) in 2021 Summer.

He was a member of the Szépírók Társasága (Belletrist Association Society), Digitális Irodalmi Akadémia (DIA, Digital Literary Academy) and Széchenyi Irodalmi és Művészeti Akadémia (Széchenyi Academy of Literature and Arts).
