EMİNE

Kuşlar tarar saçlarını Emine'nin,
Güneş papatya falı gibi bir açar,
Bir kapar, testi pencerede soğurdu.
Bir yelkenli yaklaşırdı kara dutun
Üstünden, girer baş sedire kurulur.
Keserdi karpuzu Emine, bir aşkı
Bitirir gibi, sonra ansızın sarkar
Dayanılmaz özlemlere tahtaboştan.
Kırmızılar doğrar artık, kırmızılar
Ve yıkardı ellerini mavilikte.
Serçeler düşer parmaklıktan bahçeye,
Başucunda ak bir bulut dolaşırdı.
Kırık merdiven, evler arası bostan,
Senin ülkendi Emine, yaz ve gölge.
Nice yazlar geçirdik sonradan, nice
Uzun günler! Sevgiler o saksıların,
O sardunyaların yerini tutmadı.

Az mı yaşadık, az mı kocadık, az mı!
Büyük kentin trenleri geçer gider
Ufkumuzdan, hep o çocuksu kiremit,
Tek başına, alçak bir damın üstünde,
Durur gibi yapardı üç gün üç gece,

Sonra ölür, bir yıldız inerdi gökten.
Emine kapısında görünüverir!
Ayakta, aynalara dönük, gülünür,
Şeftali, kavun dondurması yenirdi.
-Siz büyük yoldasınız, derdi Emine,
Biz mutluluk avcıları bir öpüşle
Kayboluruz, kimin nesi belli değil.

Her tahta eşikten, her koldan ve gözden
Emine'nin bahçesine girilirdi.
Küçük iskeleyi dışarda bekletir,
Sıraya dizer hasır talikaları,
Bir rüzgara bürünürdü fidan gibi.
Bir bulut sanki, yaz bulutu ve yağmur,
Alır başını sinemaya giderdi.
Emine bu, mahallenin sevgilisi.
Yıkıntılarımızın üstünde hatmi
Gibi açar çiçeklerini ayrılık,
Buluşmalar hemen eskir atılırdı.
Her avuçta bir gökyüzü bulan gençlik!
Akşamı yok bir gündüz doğurur gece
Ve sarılı beyazlı dişi köpekler
Çelişik kedilere doğru uzardı.

Sizin için, derdi Emine, şafakla
Yüz yüzeyim dudak dudağa, geceler
Yaşadım sizin için ve bu karanfil
Senin yalnızlığın için böyle kokar.
-Ay Buluta girince, derdi Emine,
Leylaklar açıyor omuz başlarımda,
Ut çalın bana büyüsün memelerim.
Bir yemiş böyle çürür işte! Devrilir
Cömert meydanlarda bunayan ağaçlar.
Hani güneşin, diye düşünür insan,
Hani gün boyunca akan su! Hani sen,
Hani ben! Nerde o bahçenin havuzu!
Nerde rüzgârlara bürünmüş Emine!

Elbette bütün bunlar bizim içindi.
Kimden türemişse türemiş o oğlan,
Şarkılı bir kahvede kanıma girdi.
Dökülen ilk güldü Emine elimde,
Ki sıcak yazları savrulur içimde.

EMINE

Birds combed Emine's hair.
The sun like a fortune-telling daisy now opened
Then closed. The pitcber went cold by the window.
A sailing ship approached above
The mulberry tree, settled by the big cedar.
Emine cut the water melon,
Like finishing off a love, then suddenly leant over
The balcony into unbearable longings.
Finally she sliced the red pulp and washed off
The red juice from her bands in the blue.
The sparrows dropped from the railing into the garden,
Overhead a white cloud was wandering.
A broken ladder, a garden between the houses,
It was your country, Emine, summer and shade.
How many summers have we been tbrough since then,
How many long days! But those loves of yours
Never replaced your flowerpots and geraniums.

Have we lived only a little, bave we grown old just a little?
The big city trains come and go
On our horizon, the tiles of childhood,
Alone on a low roof,
Made in three days and three nights,
Then dying, a star shot down from the sky.
Emine suddenly appeared at the door!
Standing, facing the mirrors, laughing.
She gave me peach and melon ice-cream to eat.
Emine used to say: `You are on a long journey,
We hunters of happiness get lost with a single kiss.
It's not clear who is who, what is wbat.'

From every wooden doorstep, every direction and all eyes
You could enter Emine's garden.
She made the harbour crowd wait outside -
Little wicker horse carts lined up there
Like saplings wrapped by the wind.
She rushed off to the cinema
Like a cloud, a summer cloud giving rain.
Emine was the local darling.
Our partings and meetings opened their flowers,
As soon as they grew old
Were thrown away
Like mallows on our ruins.
Youth catching a sky in each handful!
A day without evening gave birth to night
And yellow and white bitches
Went out and chased wild cats.

Emine used to say: `I am face to face for you
With the dawn, lips to lips. I lived
The nigbts for you and tbis carnation
Smells like this for your loneliness.'
`When the moon goes into the cloud,' Emine would say,
`Lilacs open on my shoulders -
Play the lute for me and make my breasts grow.'

This is bow a fruit rots! The aged
Trees fall in the broad squares.
Where is my sun, one thinks,
My water that runs all day? Where are you,
And I? Wbere is the pool in the garden?
And where is windblown Emine?

These things were really ours.
This boy, wherever he sprang from, arrived
And entered the blood in a cafe where songs are sung.
The first rose was Emine whose petals collapsed in my hand,
The hot summers blew inside me.

Oktay Rifat

* 10.06.1914, Trabzon, Turkey
† 18.04.1988, Istanbul, Turkey

Oktay Rifat, is one of the most distinguished of 20th century Turkish poets. He was the son of the poet and linguist Samih Rıfat, who was also the governor of Trabzon. He attended Ankara High School for Boys (1932) and graduated from Ankara University, Faculty of Law (1936).

He was appointed to Paris, France by the State Ministry to do his PhD, however came back after three years without completing his degree due to outbreak of World War II.

Back in Istanbul he started to work at the General Directorate of Press and Publishing (1943) and as a legal practitioner in Ankara and İstanbul. He retired when he was still a legal adviser at Turkish State Railways, İstanbul Directorate Head Office (1961-73).

His first poems were published in the review Varlık (1936-44), and he came to be known for his poems published in the reviews Aile (1947), Yaprak (1949-50) and Yeditepe (1951-57).

He became one of the pioneers of the movement called “New Poetry”, or “Strange” (Garip), with his poems published in the book Garip (Strange), which he published in collaboration with Orhan Veli Kanık and Melih Cevdet Anday in 1941.

He focused on social issues in his poems, in which he employed the features of folk poetry and thus reinvented himself. He followed the vogue of the surrealistic understanding of poetry like the other poets of the Second New movement.

Besides poetry, he wrote plays and translated works from French. He collected the Yeditepe Poetry Prize in 1955 with Karga ile Tilki (The Crow and the Fox) and the Turkish Language Association Poetry Award in 1970 with his book Şiirler (Poems).

His play Yağmur Sıkıntısı (Oppressive Air) was selected as the Best Play of the Year by the Ankara Art Fans Association and won the achievement award at the Turkish Radio and Television Art Awards Contest in 1970.

He also won the Sedat Simavi Foundation Award in 1980 with his book Bir Cigara İçimi (Smoking a Cigarette), the Madarali Novel Award in 1981 with Danaburnu (Calf Nose) and the Necatigil Poetry Award in 1984 with Dilsiz ve Çıplak (Mute and Naked). All his works were published by Adam Publications with the title Bütün Şiirleri (All Poems).
