The Cinnamon Peeler

If I were a cinnamon peeler
I would ride your bed
and leave the yellow bark dust
on your pillow.

Your breasts and shoulders would reek
you could never walk through markets
without the profession of my fingers
floating over you. The blind would
stumble certain of whom they approached
though you might bathe
under rain gutters, monsoon.

Here on the upper thigh
at this smooth pasture
neighbour to your hair
or the crease
that cuts your back. This ankle.
You will be known among strangers
as the cinnamon peeler's wife.

I could hardly glance at you
before marriage
never touch you
- your keen nosed mother, your rough brothers.
I buried my hands
in saffron, disguised them
over smoking tar,
helped the honey gatherers . . .

When we swam once
I touched you in water
and our bodies remained free,
you could hold me and be blind of smell.
You climbed the bank and said

this is how you touch other women
the grass cutter's wife, the lime burner's daughter.
And you searched your arms
for the missing perfume

                                      and knew

                  what good is it
to be the lime burner's daughter
left with no trace
as if not spoken to in the act of love
as if wounded without the pleasure of a scar.

You touched
your belly to my hands
in the dry air and said
I am the cinnamon
peeler's wife. Smell me.

Der Zimtschäler

Wäre ich ein Zimtschäler
ich würde dein Bett reiten
und gelben Rindenstaub
auf deinem Kissen hinterlassen.

Deine Brüste und Schultern würden riechen
Du könntest niemals über die Märkte gehen
ohne daß der Beruf meiner Finger
über dich flösse. Die Blinden würden
stolpern, wären sicher, wem sie sich näherten
auch wenn du dich badetest
unter Wasserspeiern, Monsun.

Hier auf dem Oberschenkel
auf dieser weichen Weide
Nachbar deines Haars

so berührst du andere Frauen
des Grasschneiders Frau, des Kalkbrenners Tochter.
Und du suchtest auf deinen Armen
nach dem fehlenden Parfüm
     und wußtest

was nützt es
des Kalkbrenners Tochter zu sein
zurückgelassen ohne Spur
als würde man im Liebesakt nicht mit ihr sprechen
als sei sie verwundet und ohne die Freuden einer Narbe.

Du brachtest
deinen Bauch an meine Hände
an der trockenen Luft und sagtest
Ich bin des
Zimtschälers Frau. Riech mich.

O descascador de Canela

Se eu fosse um descascador de canela
cavalgaria a tua cama
e deixaria o pó da casca amarela
na tua almofada.

Os teus seios e os teus ombros cheirariam a canela
nunca mais poderias atravessar os mercados
sem a profissão dos meus dedos
flutuando sobre ti. Os cegos
tropeçariam à tua aproximação
por mais que te banhasses
nas caleiras da chuva, na monção.

Aqui no cimo da coxa
neste pasto macio
vizinho do teu cabelo
ou do sulco
que te divide as costas. Este tornozelo.
Serás conhecida entre os estranhos
como a mulher do descascador de canela.

Eu quase não olharia para ti
antes do casamento
nunca te tocaria
- a tua arguta mãe,os teus toscos irmãos.
Enterrei as minhas mãos
em açafrão, disfarcei-as
com alcatrão de tabaco,
Ajudei os apicultores a colher o mel…

Uma vez quando nadávamos
toquei-te na água
e os nossos corpos permaneceram livres,
tu podias abraçar-me e continuar cega ao cheiro.
Saltaste para a margem e disseste

é assim que tocas as outras mulheres
a mulher do cortador de relva, a filha do queimador de limões.
E procuraste nos teus braços
o perfume em falta

                         e percebeste

           como é bom
ser a filha do queimador de limões
sem qualquer vestígio
como se não te falassem durante acto do amor
como se ferida sem o prazer de uma cicatriz.

Tocaste
o teu ventre com as minhas mãos
no ar seco e disseste
sou a mulher do descascador
de canela. Cheira-me.
