Der Wind, der in die Küche weht, rüttelt am Plakat
mit dem Gesicht irgendeiner Schauspielerin vom Stummfilm.
Mary Pickford vielleicht. Sie ist schön, ihre Augen
leuchten sanft, und mit dem Mund bilden sie ein leichtes
Lächeln, unheimlich zärtlich und still.
   Auch wir hier sind stumme Schauspieler. Wir haben ein
sanftes Leuchten, verschmuddelte Zärtlichkeiten mit
trockenem Blut wie Kinder, viel Schweigen drumherum.
   Das Parkett bevorzugt den Tonfilm. Wer hat diesen
Streifen gedreht? Auf dieser Seite der Leinwald, unsere,
hört man, wie Tote allmählich, wie ein Ächzen des Traums,
Leben loslassen, die Gefolterten schreien, Leute
zerknirschen in der Gefangenschaft, unter dem Getöse der
Militärstiefel ist die Ungerechtigkeit ein teuflisches
Gebrüll. Auf der anderen Seite sehen sie scheinbar blasse
Gespenster, und kein Piano kündigt sie an.
   Ich liebe dich, Mary Pickford, ich weiß, daß du mich
jetzt liebst. Der Wind weht herein und rüttelt an unseren
Liebesgeschichten aus Papier.

The wind that comes into the kitchen tears at the poster with the face of an actress from the silent movies, Mary Pickford maybe. She is beautiful. Her gentle eyes shine delicately. With her mouth, they shape the most tender smile, a silent half-smile.
    We too, here, are actors from the silent movies. Our eyes shine gently. For us, like kids, tenderness comes smudged in dry blood. A great silence surrounds us.
    The audiences would rather have talking films. Who made this movie? On this side of the screen, our side, you hear the dead little by little letting go of life like a faint rustle in a dream.  In prisons people sizzle, the tortured scream. Under thundering military boots injustice roars from its hell. On the other side, apparently they just see ghosts drift back and forth with no piano to announce them.
    I love you, Mary Pickford. I know now you love me too. The wind comes in and twists and tears our paper loves.

Il vento che entra in cucina fa fremere il poster con il
volto di una qualche attrice del muto, forse Mary Pickford.
È bella, brillan soavemente i suoi occhi e con la bocca formano
un mezzo sorriso tenerissimo, tranquillo.
   Anche noi siamo attori del muto. Abbiamo
splendori soavi, tenerezze sporche di sangue aggrumato come bimbi,
molto silenzio intorno.
   La platea preferisce il film sonoro. Chi ha girato questa
pellicola? Da questa parte dello schermo, la nostra, si sente
come i morti perdendo la vita poco a poco, come un frusciar di
sogni, i torturati gridano, strepita la gente nel carcere, sotto
il fracasso degli stivali dei soldati l’ingiustizia è un ruggito infernale.
Dall’altro lato sembra che vedano passare fantasmi
pallidi e non c’è pianoforte che li annunci.
   Io ti amo, Mary Pickford, so che ora mi ami. Entra il
vento e scuote i nostri amori di carta.
