Allen Ginsberg dying

Allen Ginsberg is dying
It's in all the papers
It's on the evening news
A great poet is dying
But his voice
                     won't die
His voice is on the land
In Lower Manhattan
in his own bed
he is dying
There is nothing
to do about it
He is dying the death that everyone dies
He is dying the death of the poet
He has a telephone in his hand
and he calls everyone
from his bed in Lower Manhattan
All around the world
late at night
the telephone is ringing
This is Allen
                      the voice says
Allen Ginsberg calling
How many times have they heard it
over the long great years
He doesn't have to say Ginsberg
All around the world
in the world of poets
there is only one Allen
I wanted to tell you he says
He tells them what's happening
what's coming down
on him
Death the dark lover
going down on him
His voice goes by satellite
over the land
over the Sea of Japan
where he once stood naked
trident in hand
like a young Neptune
a young man with black beard
standing on a stone beach
It is hightide and the seabirds cry
The waves break over him now
and the seabirds cry
on the San Francisco waterfront
There is a high wind
There are great whitecaps
lashing the Embarcadero
Allen is on the telephone
His voice is on the waves
I am reading Greek poetry
The sea is in it
Horses weep in it
The horses of Achilles
weep in it
here by the sea
in San Francisco
where the waves weep
They make a sibilant sound
a sibylline sound
Allen
         they whisper
                             Allen

Allen Ginsberg liegt im Sterben

Allen Ginsberg liegt im Sterben
Es steht in allen Zeitungen
Es kommt in den Abendnachrichten
Ein großer Dichter liegt im Sterben
Aber seine Stimme
                              stirbt nicht
Seine Stimme ist über dem Land
In Lower Manhattan
in seinem eigenen Bett
liegt er im Sterben
Man kann nichts
dagegen tun
Er stirbt den Tod den jeder stirbt
Er stirbt den Tod des Dichters
Er hat ein Telefon in der Hand
und er ruft jeden an
von seinem Bett in Lower Manhattan
Überall auf der Welt
spät nachts
klingelt das Telefon
„Allen hier“
                  sagt die Stimme
„Hier ist Allen Ginsberg“
Wie oft hat man das gehört
in all den langen großen Jahren
Er muss nicht Ginsberg sagen
Überall auf der Welt
gibt es in der Welt der Dichter
nur einen Allen
„Ich wollt’s euch erzählen“ sagt er
Er sagt ihnen was passiert
was hereinbricht
     über ihn
Tod der dunkle Geliebte
stürzt sich auf ihn
Seine Stimme weht via Satellit
über das Land
über das japanische Meer
wo er einst nackt stand
Dreizack in der Hand
wie ein junger Neptun
ein junger Mann mit schwarzem Bart
der an einem Kiesstrand steht
Es ist Flut und die Seevögel schreien
Die Wellen brechen sich über ihm
und  die Seevögel schreien
am Gestade von San Francisco
Ein Sturm kommt auf
Große weiße Schaumkronen
peitschen über den Embarcadero
Allen ist am Telefon
Seine Stimme ist auf den Wellen
Ich lese griechische Dichtung
Das Meer ist in darin
Pferde weinen darin
Die Pferde des Achill
weinen darin
hier am Meer
in San Francisco
wo die Wellen weinen
Sie machen ein raues Geräusch
ein raunendes Geräusch
Allen
         murmeln sie
                             Allen

Allen Ginsberg Ölüyor

Allen Ginsberg ölüyor

Bundan  söz ediyor bütün gazeteler

Bütün akşam haberleri

Büyük bir şair ölüyor

Fakat O’nun sesi

         asla ölmeyecek

O ses ki tüm ülkenin üzerinde

Aşağı Manhattan’da

yatağında

ölüyor

Yapılabilecek hiçbir şey yok

Ansızın ölecek herkes gibi

Bir şairin yokoluşu ansızın

Elinde telefon

herkesi arıyor

Aşağı Manhattan’da yatağında

Dünyanın her köşesinde

gecenin geç saatinde

telefon çalıyor

Ben Allen

          diyor bu ses

Allen Ginsberg

kaç kez duydular bu sesi

O uzun muhteşem yıllar boyunca

Ginsberg demesine gerek yoktu

bütün dünyada

şairler dünyasında

sadece bir Allen vardı

O’nun söylediklerini anlatmak isterdim

O, neler olup bittiğini anlatır

canını neyin sıktığını

ölüm karanlık sevgili

O’nun üzerine kapanıyor

sesi uyduyla yayılıyor

tüm ülkeye

yayılıyor Japon Denizi’nin üzerine

genç bir Neptün gibi

elinde mızrakla

çıplak durduğu yere

siyah sakallı bir genç adam

duruyor taşlık bir sahilde

yüksek, yalçın

ve deniz kuşları bağırıyor

dalgalar O’na örtüyor şimdi

ve deniz kuşları çığlık atıyor

San Francisco kıyılarında

kuvvetli bir rüzgar

Embarcadero’yu sarsan

Allen telefonda

sesi dalgalarla geliyor

Yunan şiiri okuyorum

Denizden söz eden

ağlayan atlardan

Aşil’in atları ağlıyor

burada deniz kıyısında

San Francisco’da

dalgaların ağladığı

ıslıklı bir sesle

kehanette bulunan bir ses

Allen

      diye fısıldıyorlar

                  Allen

* 24.03.1919, Yonkers, New York, United States
† 22.02.2021, San Francisco, United States

A prominent voice of the wide-open poetry movement that began in the 1950s, Lawrence Ferlinghetti has written poetry, translation, fiction, theater, art criticism, film narration, and essays.

Ferlinghetti was born in Yonkers in 1919. He received a Master’s degree from Columbia University in 1947 and a Doctorate de l’Université de Paris (Sorbonne) in 1950. In 1953, with Peter D. Martin, he founded City Lights Bookstore, the first all-paperbound bookshop in the country, and by 1955 he had launched the City Lights publishing house. His publication of Allen Ginsberg’s Howl in 1956 led to his arrest on obscenity charges, and the trial that followed drew national attention to the San Francisco Renaissance and Beat movement writers. This landmark First Amendment case established a legal precedent for the publication of controversial work with redeeming social importance.

Ferlinghetti’s paintings have been shown at various galleries around the world, from the Butler Museum of American Painting to Il Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome.

Ferlinghetti’s A Coney Island of the Mind continues to be the most popular poetry book in the U.S. It has been translated into nine languages, and there are nearly 1,000,000 copies in print. The author of poetry, plays, fiction, art criticism, and essays, he has a dozen books currently in print in the U.S., and his work has been translated in many countries and in many languages. His most recent books are A Far Rockaway of the Heart (1997), How to Paint Sunlight (2001), and Americus Book I (2004) published by New Directions.

Ferlinghetti died on February 22, 2021, at his home in San Francisco at age 101.
