Al llarg de tota una impaciencia, 37

A Erich Fried

¿Com evitar
de ser massa rotund
sense anar a raure al silenci?

¿No és bo el silenci
que conté
tots els interrogants?

Llavors, sense dir res,
algú alça un dit
com si reptés algú.

¿Vol fer-ho ? ¿O potser vol
afirmar simplement
el dret que té a la vida?

I l’amabilitat,
¿mai no serà possible?

Dann hebt wortlos
einer den Finger
als wollte er einen herausfordern.

Will er es wirklich? Oder will er
vielleicht nur
sein Lebensrecht behaupten?

Und die Freundlichkeit –
soll sie nie möglich sein?

* 10.09.1934, Sabadell, Spain
lives in: Sabadell, Spain

Feliu Formosa is a poet, translator, playwright, essayist, actor and theatre director.

He made his debut as a poet with Brief Dawns in One’s Hands (1973) becoming thus a tardy but valuable member of the ’70s generation, which includes such outstanding poets as Pere Gimferrer, Francesc Parcerisas, and Narcís Comadira. In his Llibres de les meditacions, he renders homage to writers like Cesare Pavese and Gabriel Ferrater, while Raval revisits his childhood in the Raval neighbourhood of Barcelona and Cançoner is a moving collection of poems written after the death of his first wife. In Llibre dels viatges, he introduces the discourse of the Unconscious. Later, he would produce the outstanding prose poems collected in Per Puck along with the collections Impasse (1992) and Immediacions (2000). His poetry is eclectic and personal, frequently reflecting on the expressive capacity and nature of language. The volume Darrera el vidre: poesia 1972-2002 contains his complete poetic works.

Formosa has translated many works from German into Catalan and Spanish, by authors as varied as G.E. Lessing, F. Hölderlin, G. Trakl, F. Kafka, B. Brecht and Th. Bernhard. He is also an outstanding diarist and has published works like Vulnerable Present (1979) A Contratemps (2005), El somriure de l'atzar (2005), Sala de miralls (2012) and Sense Nostàlgia (2015). He has been awarded a number of prestigious prizes for his work, for example the National Culture Prize for Theatre, the Creu de Sant Jordi, the Carles Riba Poetry Prize, the City of Barcelona Prize, the Theatre Institute Prize of Honour and the Ministry of Culture’s National Prize for Translation. He has also been Dean of the Institute of Catalan Letters.
