Whale

On a winter's night, a pod of whales made their way to the village,
taking possession of half of the land, quietly,
like the mountains at our doorsteps. They wouldn’t leave
No matter how hard we tried to persuade them. What's to be done?
Dark, stubborn, unresponsive. So we simply shouted
into the deep holes of their mouths.
But what we heard was mostly our own voices.
We tried to light their eyes with lamps: a forbidden sea.
We tried to weigh their mysterious weight,
the strength gone, becoming nothing, endless nothingness.
What's to be done? They just wouldn’t leave.
They just wanted to live with us.
They wouldn’t even allow us to bring the morning tide
before breakfast.
These creatures, as huge as God
blocked our way, delaying time.
When we opened the window, the sea was a few yards away.
But in their eyes, we could see they didn’t welcome it—
they created a historic suicide.
Died. Their death and their weight
oppressed the land for a long time
like the mountains at our doorsteps. People brought their tools,
descended ladders, determined to take the fat
and make it into lamp oil for the church.
The rest would go to the families. Then like digging holes,
one hole led to another, each moving in its own direction.
As if digging in the earth, but the more you dig the more earth.
If you hit stones (questionable bones), just
remove them and build them into walls — so they will become
faded, become history, become ruins— alas,
everywhere, everywhere would smell of fish
and the minty truth, even today,
they are still compelling,
unlike the whales—they suddenly appeared like night,
distrustful, and depressing.

Wale

Egal, was wir sagten,
sie wollten nicht gehen. Was sollten wir tun?
Dunkel, stur, teilnahmslos. Man konnte genauso gut hingehen
Was sollten wir tun?
Sie wollten mit uns zusammen bleiben;
Was übrig blieb,

* 18.03.1960, Fuzhou, China
lives in: Fuzhou, China

Lü De'an (*1960) was born in a small town of Fujian province, southeast coast of China. He quit high school and later went to an art school to learn painting. He began to write poetry in 1978. He lived in New York City from 1991 to 1994 as an artist and returned to China in 1995 to built a cabin in the mountain area of his hometown where he has continued to write and paint. He has been a highly acclaimed poet in China since the 80s but has kept a low key for almost three decades and avoided the poetry debates or showcases until appointed as poetry editor of the ImpactChina website in 2011. One interesting story about him was that when Yu Jian gave his first USA reading in Boston in 2004, he (Lü De'an) was rejected at the door and later he made an understated remark: Yu Jian was inside reading and visited Seamus Heaney upstairs (at Harvard), I was outside waiting because they didn’t allow me to enter. He was published together with Yu Jian and Han Dong in their unofficial but influential magazine “They” in the 80-90s, the other two became famous while he’s been hardly noticed until his third collection of poetry came out in 2010. Time Magazine in China hailed him as Chinese Robert Frost. Poets and critics in China today praise him highly for his solid craftsmanship.
