Sergej Timofejev was born in 1970 in the Latvian capital Riga, which at that time still belonged to the Soviet Union. He sees himself as a Latvian poet, even though he writes and publishes in Russian and is also closely connected to the contemporary Russian poet scene.
Since 2005 Timofejev has published several volumes of poetry, some in Riga, others in St. Petersburg and Moscow. His poems, which with their syncopated rhythm are reminiscent of the psychedelic texts of the beatniks, were translated into English, Italian, Swedish, German, Ukrainian and published in various international anthologies.

The poet Timofejev works as an action artist, DJ and rock band leader at the intersection of poetry, music and video. In the 1990s he was next to Semyon Khanin one of the organizers of the multimedia poetry project »Orbita« and is considered as a pioneer of video poetry in the post-Soviet space. With the »Orbita« project, five Russian-language poets and artists from Riga are attempting to break the poetry out of the purely literary context with audio-visual experiments, films and installations. Alone or together with Orbita, he has already taken part in numerous international poetry festivals.

Timofejev also works as a journalist and as a translator (including plays by Alvis Hermanis) and writes lyrics for the band Brainstorm. In 2003 he was shortlisted for the Russian Andrej Bely Prize for Poetry.

In 2011 he headed the National Council for Culture at the Latvian Ministry of Culture. Sergej Timofejev lives in Riga.
