Pedro Tamen was born in Lisbon, in 1934. He studied Law at Universidade de Lisboa.

He was the Director of the publisher Moraes between 1958 and 1975 and, until 2000 (when he retired), he was a member of the board of directors of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He was also a cine-club leader, high school teacher and editor in chief of a generalist magazine. He did book reviews for the weekly newspaper Expresso; he was the President of P.E.N. Club Português (1987-90), he was member of the board of directors of Associação Portuguesa de Escritores.

His poems have been translated and published in French, English, Spanish, Italian, german, Hungarian, Romanian, Czech, Slovenian, Bulgarian, Swedish and Dutch.

He is also a translator for literature and he won several prizes on Translation (the Portuguese Translation Award and the European Translation Award). Tamen also won several prizes in Portugal for his Poetry (Prémio D.Dinis (1981), Prémio da Crítica (1991), Grande Prémio Inapa de Poesia (1991), Prémio Nicola (1997) and Prémio do PEN Clube (2000).
