Marzanna Bogumiła Kielar was born on February 8, 1963 in Goldap, Poland. Kielar studied philosophy at university in Warsaw. She debuted with the poetry collection Sacra Conversazione in 1992, for which she immediately gained critical acclaim. In 2000, her second volume of poetry, Materia prima, was shortlisted for the NIKE Literary Prize, the most prestigious of Polish awards.

Kielar has participated in numerous international poetry festivals and has been granted fellowships from various cultural foundations - most importantly from the Akademie Schloss Solitude (1999, chosen by J.M. Coetzee), Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators (1997; 2000), Ministry of Art and Culture Stipend (1998; 2005), International Writing Program at the University of Iowa (2002), International Writers Workshop at the Hong Kong Baptist University (2007). Her poetry has been translated into 22 languages and presented in numerous magazines, including World Literature Today, Poetry Review, Poetry Wales, Chicago Review, The Spoon River Poetry Review, Lyrikvannen, Die Horen, Host, Die Welt and over thirty anthologies. Kielar is a member of the Polish PEN Club and the Polish Writers Association.

Marzanna Bogumiła Kielar lives in Warsaw and is an associate professor at the College of Special Needs Education, Department of Methodology and Creativity Education.
