Jean-Marc Desgent (Montreal, 1951), poet, short-story writer, and critic, Jean-Marc Desgent earned a BA in literature in 1975, then an MA in anthropology from the Université de Montréal. For a time he worked as a printer before accepting a post as a teacher at the Cégep de Rosemont from 1976 to 1978. Since 1978, he has worked at the Cégep Édouard-Montpetit, where he still teaches. Member of the editorial board of Éditions Cul-Q from 1975 to 1977 and regular contributor to Hobo-Québec, he has published texts in magazines such as Ovo, Jungle (France), Mensuel 25 (Belgium), Vagabondages, La Nouvelle Barre du jour, Travers, Lèvres urbaines and Nos Livres.

In 1994, Jean-Marc Desgent won the Grand Prix du Festival International de Poésie with his book Ce que je suis devant personne, and in 2005, with Vingtièmes siècles. In 2000, he received the Prix Rina-Lasnier for his poetry collection Les Paysages de l’extase. In 2002, he received the Prix Félix-Antoine-Savard for a suite of poems published in the magazine Moebius. In 2005, Vingtièmes siècles also won the Governor-General’s Award for poetry and the Prix Estuaire des Terrasses Saint-Sulpice. In 2006, Jean-Marc Desgent won the Prix Jaime Sabinès/Gatien Lapointe for the body of his work translated into Spanish. He was the guest of honor at the seventh Marché francophone de la poésie in Montreal, and is a member of the Union des écrivaines et écrivains québécois.
