Fatima Naoot‎ is a poet, journalist and architect. She was born in Cairo in 1964. After her graduation 1987 as an architect at Ein Shams University Cairo, she worked in her field for ten years. Then she left her job deciding to devote all her time to literature. Today she also works as a journalist and TV presenter.

In her poems, she follows with curiosity the social and political changes taking place in her country. Fatima Naoot has chosen poetry as a form of expression to shake people up and deliver truths to them that speak of dignity and mutual respect regardless of origin, belief or religion.

She has published 19 books to date: seven poetry collections, nine translated anthologies from English into Arabic, and three books in literature criticism. She is chief editor of the literary magazine Qaws Qazah (The Rainbow) and writes columns, articles and critics to Arabic magazines and newspapers in Egypt and the Middle East. In both articles and poems, she pays attention to minorities in Egypt like Copts and women. She has translated novels and short stories by Virginia Woolf, Phillip Roth and John Ravenscroft and a volume of American and English poetry.

Fatima Naoot has been invited to many international literature festivals and she is a member of several writers organisations like the Egypt Writers' Union, the Arab Union for Internet Writers and Poets of the World. Her poetry has been translated into English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Chinese and Kurdish.

In January 2016, Fatima Naoot was sentenced to three years in prison and an EGP 20,000 fine over charges of contempt of the Islamic religion. Naoot faced trial after expressing personal views regarding the slaughter rituals during the Muslim Eid El-Adha. In a post on her facebook page back in October 2014, Naoot criticised “animal slaughter” in reference to the religious tradition of sacrificing sheep.
