O ANJO
portugiesisch | Rita Taborda Duarte
Vinha para me buscar mas ainda cá ando:
tive nojo ao anjo
Chegou-me acenando com as asas encardidas
THE ANGEL
englisch
Came for me but still I am here:
the angel disgusted me
It came to me waving its grubby wings
its feathers slimyfrom the sap on its quills
It did not even appear to be the real dark angel
from the wretched story of this life: just genuine neglect
the grime beneath the dull halo: lint and dust in sum
no elegance in displaying weevils on the limp wings
on its back
I was tempted to follow it
to give it at least a silvery bath in sterling alloy
something that in death would grant me
a lowly sheen I had not had in life
But it is so hard to scrub an angel feather by feather
It came to me waving its two wings - more owl than angel
I did not follow it where it fell filthy: I am still here
I mark time in this substantial hell
RECOLHER 3
portugiesisch | Rita Taborda Duarte
rendilhar a lume o ferro frio que me amparava a testa
e as duas mães espalmadas cheias dedos;
a vida
olhava-me com troça e gozo
e sorria-me com o riso bojudo de uma nau
aberta ao rio. Os corvos bicavam-lhe os olhos de pedra
e uns tufos de penas mal talhadas faziam de
melena cacheada atrás da orelha. Entre mim
e a cabeça do gigante não havia medo:
só o gradeamento verde da varanda.
Era um dó fundo que doía
ver aquele gigante soberbo
– quase só cabeça e
uma boca inteira de naufrágio –
envergar um chapéu ridículo,
de gávea à banda.
Hoje, sou mais pequena
do que quando era pequena
e o mundo além gradil
é ainda mais pequeno
do que o tamanho da altura
do que então eu via
e
cabe, agora, todo inteiro
no sorriso de uma Lisboa
escancarada
defronte da varanda
da casa que me era a minha avó.

RECOLLECTING 3
englisch
I once was very small and in those days
between me and the world stood the railing
of my grandmother’s veranda.
It wasn’t easy, for the blacksmith,
to weave in the fire the cold iron that protected me my forehead
and both hands pressed flat with fingers splayed;
he rendered it naked that rough railing for peering
at life
On the wall of the market, at forno do tijolo,
the giant, of rough limestone, all head, almost all,
looked at my in mockery and jest
and smiled at me with the bulging smile of a ship
open to the river. The crows pecked at its stone eyes
and a few tufts of poorly carved feathers served as a
ruff of hair curled behind the ear. Between me
and the giant’s headthere was no fear:
just the green railing of the veranda.
It was a deeply felt pain
to see that proud giant
- almost all head and
an entire mouth of shipwreck -
wear a ridiculous hat
with a crow’s nest to one side.
Today I am smaller
than when I was small
and the world beyond the railing
is even smaller
than the size of the height
of what I saw then
and
now fits, entire,
in the smile of a Lisbon
thrown open
in front of the veranda
of the home that was my grandmother.
RECOLHER I
portugiesisch | Rita Taborda Duarte
sequer me lembrava até onde estacionara o carro
Acontece-me muito de manhã esquecer-me do lugar
onde à noite estacionei a realidade
quanto menos tivermos menos perdemos
as ferramentas as casas a papelada a mobília as

RECOLLECTING I
englisch
A sudden kiss and in the distance a full measure of river
It was the day I lost everything almost everything the car keys
even the ground It did not matter at all because
I could not even recall where I had parked the car
It happens to me a lot in the morning forgetting the place
I parked the night before reality
Better sometimes just to be stripped of everything
the less we have the less we lose
for instance time the less we gather
the less we clutter for instance life
without cheap knickknacks at the bottom of a purse
the more easily things fall into our hand
for instance loneliness
Even that sudden kiss stuck in the frame of a useless river
will have been lost among the baubles we have gathered,
children books earrings (so many earrings are lost in a lifetime)
tools houses paperwork furniture
clothing debris and words memories trinkets
that belonged to our grandparents: the old keep so much junk
so many tangled electrical wires so many unpaired socks
so much uncoupled love lying around there
around where?
In this mess of gathering all in disarray
how then to find suddenly
the kiss we find ourselves needing
or the picture frame
or even the immovable Tagus there inside?
MÃE IV
portugiesisch | Rita Taborda Duarte
As mães,
azedas,
transformam em leite
tudo aquilo em que tocaram e
aflitas
escavam uma cova funda no coração do útero.
Todos os meses têm mênstruos férteis
e povoam o mundo com as saudades
dos filhos
que não chegaram
a parir
Só depois
puxam como Ariadnes loucas
o cordão dos filhos entrançado
na meada da infância
-dobam-no até à raiz do tempo-
e guardam no ventre desabitado
o novelo de uma imensa solidão

MOTHER IV
englisch
Mothers,
soured,
transform into milk
all they touch and
afflicted
dig a deep pit in the heart of their uterus.
Each month they have fertile menstruations
and populate the world with the longing
for children
who never came
to be born
Only then
do they pull like mad Ariadnes
the cord of the children woven
into the skein of childhood
-they reel it in to the root of time-
And preserve in their desolate wombs
the ball of an immense solitude

e fazemos contabilidade, noite dentro.
Rasuramos e apagamos e voltamos a somar,
passamos cheques, recolhemos dividendos:
numa matemática cega, sem mais valias;
sussurramos bluffs embriagados sob a mesa,
duas torres arrasam uma diagonal inteira
e os cavalos sem freio a arquejar no tabuleiro;

Closed for Inventory

I blame you for not loving you almost at all
and I spit at you each letter of the blame that is yours.
It’s a game of chess we play always together
white king on a black square, old adversaries
ruminating on evening strategies.
I blame myself for loving in the end almost everything about you
and you blame yourself for blaming me for not loving me.
So we take out the ledger
and do the accounts, late into the night.
I do not know how other loves are
but ours is a long nocturnal book divided
into debts and credits by a thin faded sepia-hued line.
We cross out and erase and add up again,
we write checks, reap dividends:
in a blind mathematics, without added value;
for the figures of this love are never right.
We cheat with the chess pieces:
we hide pawns in baggy sleeves,
an extra queen in our shirttails…
We mutter drunken bluffs under the table,
two rooks raze an entire line
and unbridled knights are left gasping on the board;
our game of chess is a disloyal army of primitive weapons.
At the end of the night we are two kings alone
black and white
brooding on the check of repeated tallies
so let us confer the numbers that are never right
and close ourselves up with a notice on the door, worn and crossed through:
closed for the inventory of love.
