ukrainisch | Lesyk Panasiuk

JULY

englisch

The heart has suddenly hidden today

and the fingers have fallen asleep

I floundered in fog

but there was nothing to feel

Neither the bottom of a boat waves were playing with

nor a green paw of a fir-tree

nothing to feel

I tried reading the others’ poems but found only regrets

I thought of reading history books but what is history

the history doesn’t exist and hasn’t ever

instead of history books print spots of ink

We have always lived in fairy tails

for example I am the grown-up apple grain

Lying supinely

but there’s no one to quench thirst drinking from my eyes

no birds or cows or stray dogs

because the heart has hidden today and the fingers have fallen asleep

how can I even tune the guitar

how can I even sing

I’m tearing my tongue off

and throwing it into the sky

because today I want to speak

but the words are useless

I need nothing more everything becomes clear

as the heart is gone

or maybe the heart has never existed

you just believe the anatomy book

living in a fairy tale

And fingers are now like pencils that lost their heart cores

like bees that sting ones but never twice

And heart

what is heart

just empty pan

tinkling because of any careless move

and now it has also hidden

Even July this time

doesn't recite your favorite poets

doesn’t even talk to you

removes people

removes fingers

removes heart

ukrainisch | Lesyk Panasiuk

І

ALPHABET AS A WARD FOR WOUNDED

englisch

I

Can you hear these movements inside trunks

that’s language flowing in wooden veins and blossoming with barren flowers

the language is as dark as soil

as dark as blood pulling us into the ground

Red quills got stuck in the inkwells of our mouths

full of blood as if we were fighting

every word is painful

We just need to be quiet to stay alive now

Loose sand of language is taking us down

II

Letters go to war

form the words which nobody wants to pronounce

sentences hit landmines

stories are shelled by multiple launch rocket systems

Missile hits word дім

in the broken window of letter д

it’s easy to see how letter і loses her head

how a roof of letter м collapses

It’s hard to recognize the language during wartime

sentences are so awkward

nobody wants to die

nobody wants to speak

Near the hospital bed of letter й lies a prosthesis

of diacritical mark which she is ashamed

once again the seams diverge with the gaps of letter ф

from bullet wounds on the etymological front

soft sign lost his tongue during torture

Wards are full of letters

there’s even no place for apostrophe

paint is peeling down from the walls

words are falling away as confusing slang

and who will speak it

ukrainisch | Lesyk Panasiuk

TURBINES OF HYDROELECTRIC POWER STATIONS

englisch

The tops of the trees stick out of the water

like open fractures of river

Drowned towns and villages

small motherlands where you can never return

those who died before are the lucky ones

Turbines of hydroelectric power stations convert old maps

convert honor boards

convert childhood memories

convert names of relatives

and everything else into electricity

Every day now is a day of mourning

it’s enough just to turn on the light when you come back from work

The darkness hesitates a while before leaving

ukrainisch
