arabisch | Fadhil Al-Azzawi

The New Ten Commandments

englisch

Do not light up a match in a forest
A bird is afraid of fire!
Do not sit in a sunrise
Someone might be looking for light!
Do not stop a wind in the dessert
It might bring rain to the Bedouins!

Do not look in the mirror
Perhaps you became someone else!

Do not spit in a bitter well
Thirsty, you might drink from it one day!

Do not dwell in a barren woman
You might by chance, have a child with her!

Do not raise your voice in a dark night
Ghosts might hear you and enter your home out of loneliness!

Do not joke around with an executioner’s rope
Perhaps it will drag you to a hanging!

Do not supress your joys behind a mask
The wind might lift it up, whilst you are singing in the wind!

Do not enter a history that was not made by your own hands
You might fall under its train as it passes by!

arabisch | Fadhil Al-Azzawi

The Silent Procession

englisch

I had my hands in my torn pockets
as I was walking in the street.
I saw them peering at me
from behind the shopfront windows and cafes
then they would quickly step outside and follow me.

I purposely stopped to light up a cigarette
looked behind me, like one who is sheltering
himself by turning his back to the
wind, and took a glimpse
at the silent procession.
Thieves, kings, murderers, prophets and poets
were jumping everywhere
walking behind me
awaiting a signal from me.

Taken aback, I shook my head
moved on, whistling
a tune of a popular song
pretending that I am playing a role in a movie
and all I have to do is to walk forward, always
until the bitter end.

arabisch | Fadhil Al-Azzawi

Midnight

englisch

Incomprehensible screams were passing through the door’s key hole. There were shadows of soldiers with rifles on an olive coloured wall. At midnight the guard came, he called out a few names. They were shivering out of fear. He said “Come”.

The young man was thinking about his mother “Where is my shoe?”
The policeman said “No shoes, hurry up”. They left. The voices of the night finally fizzled. Then we heard ten bullets in the darkness. That’s when I silently got up and wore his shoes, for memory’s sake.

arabisch | Fadhil Al-Azzawi

How Do You Write a Magical Poem?

englisch

There’s nothing easier than writing
a magical poem, if you at least
possess strength or a good intention.
It is certainly not a difficult matter
take a cord and tie it to a cloud
with one end hanging down.
Like a child, climb up to the top
then throw the cord back at us
and let us in vain search for you
in every poem.

arabisch | Fadhil Al-Azzawi

The Party

englisch

No one was absent.
Cain was sharpening his knife in the kitchen
Noah was in the lounge room following
the weather report on television.

They all arrived in their cars
then disappeared in the long alley
on their way to the party.

Over there, we saw the beautiful lady
on the dance floor, her charming
body is on display through a sheer dress.
We sat with the guests
sculling our drinks til intoxication.

At the end of the night
on our way back home
we gave back to the blind man his lost cane
and to the murderer his bloody axe.

It was a party
like any other.

arabisch | Ghayath Almadhoun

For Damascus

englisch

It is killing me, this summer that is seeping
through the fissures of Damascus, I crawl like rust
on the doors of this prison that turned
into a museum. It is I, who sits
afraid and shy in a café on days when money
is scarce, and laughs at the top of my voice
on days when cunning pockets are full. Damascus
is my cracked home, and
Kasyon is what I mourn. I spread
in the evening like horns of cars
and carts of broad beans, I am known
to foreigners and tourists. I have no fence, any
happiness that has betrayed my face
came back apologising from my laughter. I
am the strange mixture that reigns
in the sky of the poor and the clothing of
shopfront windows. My body is fields of burning
grains of wheat, my tongue scolds
like a shoe. The police officer, the teacher
and the mysterious man stare at me, so I sadly
laugh, and they laughingly cry. Damascus
is mine, and I will not allow anyone
to share my bed, other than the wicked
and the prostitutes. I am the descending ladder
to pits set up high, and the traces of thieves
on the sand. My body is a hotel
for those departing. My words are little gospels
lost by prophets, so those astray adopted
them. Therefore I will throw the crumbs
to the barbed wire birds, and I will castrate
glory on the bitumen. This is what they taught us
in public schools, then
they released us like rabbits to chew the grass
of submission. I said to you that I will not
allow anyone to sneak in and watch Damascus as
she bathes alone, her small
breasts timidly uncovered, I will not allow you……….
to………..
pass.
