Sentir

Josep Piera

Sentir…
                             *    *

TO FEEL

To feel the green smell of calm winter,

the ice flowers whitening the heights

the transparent certainty of the nearby sea.

To feel…

the distant echo of ancient gravestones

the perfect cold silence of marble,

what was and no longer is, absent joy.

To feel…

the soft beat of drizzling darkness,

all things in nothing, the flight of a bird,

remaining life, no longer life.

To feel…

*   *

To feel dead death that is now time,

the solitary living psalm of feeling.

Oda a Santorini

Josep Piera

on l’home, com les roques, canta i plora.

ODE TO SANTORINI

The dark ardent desire I search for

in this sea of light and hope,

the desire to be the star child

that once felt he was an angel’s dream,

brought me here, like a drifting vessel,

to your port of knife-edged ashes,

moon over the blue Aegean, dormant fire

like the bird that rises after burning.

Island from the sky, born from flames,

green wasteland, fertile in slaughter,

I wanted you so, I loved you so,

that before I took your abysses

I wanted you as you are, daughter of dawn

with vineyards clinging to life,

cliffs like blades, shores of cold lava,

where man, the same as the rocks, sings and cries.

La poesia

Josep Piera

No són veus celestials, que de lluny
endins ens parlen.

Hi ha veus que són fanals en un carreró fosc;
Veus callades, veus absents, veus silencis...

La poesia són veus convertides en sons
que diuen d’on venim, on anem, i qui som.

POETRY

They are not heavenly voices speaking to us

from deep in the distance. They are well loved voices.

Inner voices, faraway voices, voices that signal

a path no one knows where it leads.

There are voices that are lamps on unlit streets;

as there are that sound like remote rustling.

There are voices that have made us become words.

Soft voices, absent voices, silent voices...

Poetry is voices turned into sounds saying

where we come from, where we’re headed, who we are.

En blanc

Josep Piera

Estic gitat al llit, malalt.
L’estiu, fora de mi, crida joiós
d’ocells el temps dolç de natura.
Tinc quaranta anys passats. I ara,

IN BLANK WHITE

I’m lying in bed, sick.

Summer, outside of me, the joyful cry

of birds the gentle time of nature.

I’m over forty. And now,

once more, after so many forgotten things,

after so much accumulated death,

a few lines of verse sum up a life.

I’m lying in bed, sick.

From far away, through the window and darkness,

come playful songs

of beautiful children, happy total strangers.

The play at the strange game of the future,

the game of time, summer, full life.

I only hear their distant laughing voices

and I see them plunge into clear water,

turned into light, their bodies naked, a wealth of joy.

Sick, in bed, alone, lying down

–my memories are far off as well, children–

I have no game left but hope.

Vinyet Panyella

                                                                                 Retrat de 1918

Escric només per a l’ombra.
Per a un miratge frágil
que amb feresa solemne desafía
la successió implacable de les hores.
Escric només per a mi. Per afermar-me
des de l’arrel profunda i solitària
i brilla, somrient, als murs de pedra
malgrat la claredat gebrada de la lluna.

                                                                                  Portrait taken in 1918

I write for darkness alone.
For the fragile mirage
that with solemn fierceness challenges
the implacable succession of hours.
I write for myself alone, to assert myself
along the descent into life’s dark well
following the trace of ivy, that climbs
from the deep and solitary root,
and shines, content, on the stone walls
in spite of the moon’s icy clarity.

Hotel Roma, III

Vinyet Panyella

Germana fosca
mare
obre’m camí
nit amiga i voraç.
Brocal de molsa
fes-me de coixí.
Arrel antiga

Hotel Roma, III

There’s a hell of silence and ice
that’s been living inside me for a long time now.
with no signs of a way out.
I want no mirrors depicting the fleeting strake of shadows.
Deprived of light I await dawn’s chiaroscuros.
Dark sister
mother
lead the way
voracious and kindly night.
Moss edging
make me a pillow.
Ancient root
welcome me in your embrace.
Earth that I am
portal of roots
open the entrance hall of eternity
the ample river of sorrow crosses.

Infància

Vinyet Panyella

i per això em sé mala deixebla.
I jo, potser, en gris paper de versos.

Childhood

Looking out of silence I learned from you
the miracle of geranium laughter,
the hidden enticement of ferns,
the joy of wild marigolds, and the sweet
and persistent blooming of the roses
you planted in our window box.

I celebrated from within, not inside
the house, but deeper inside.
The plants lived for your hands
that conveyed the instinct of survival
and growth in beauty, even though
it was for so humble a scene
as our slight and frail balcony.

I am grateful you taught me
what can’t be learned in books or school.
Now I have a garden I can’t inhabit,
and that’s how I know I’m a bad pupil.
On the other hand, though, I believe
in that persistent instinct of survival
and transmission that touched me
from the start. You will always live
on in a garden, inside the four of us,
and I may live on the gray pages of verse.

Els arqueòlegs

Vinyet Panyella

                                                                 Nocturn vora Atenes

Han passat moltes hores, dies llargs
penetrant les entranyes de la terra
cercant-hi no els orígens de la vida
sinó el testimoni de la mort:
només fragments, rastres lleus i ancestrals

al so d’alguna música propera

Archaeologist

                                                         Nocturne near Athens

They spent many hours, long days
digging into the entrails of earth
searching for the evidence of death
rather than the origin of life.
Small shards, slight ancestral traces
of common forebearers revived in myths.
Burnt by the hot southern sun,
they have savored the taste of dust,
as bitter as the wind, as dry as clay.

In the evening they change skins
and leaving the home of gods and myths
they go back to their mortal measure.
Dressed in blue jeans
they walk through the peaceful night
and dance, holding each other, oblivious,
to the sound of nearby music,
from a walled garden full of myrtle in bloom,
with the passion that makes them mortals
again and rivets them to the remains of life.

Cavalls i collaret

Vinyet Panyella

J.V. Foix, “Notes sobre la mar”. Gertrudis (1927)
I
V
Cavalls o collaret. Qui sóc, de totes dues? Jardí de dues ombres. Mimosa i buguenvíl·lia, espígol i roser, xiprer i tamariu. Capvespre I alba. Sorra i rocam. Còdol I duna. Alga I petxina. Aiguamoll, cova de mar, liquen. Sóc totes dues.
VI
I no temo els cavalls adormits dins l’aigua fosca.
VII
Corall i ambre. La tria del tresor. Corall i ambre.

Galop endins, renills i tombarelles.
Cavalls i collaret.
XI
Cavalls i collaret. Corall I ambre. Riell de vidre I miralls de sorra. Sóc totes dues? Sóc.

Horses and Necklace

I
Shipwrecks inhabit the sea before me. Cradle and grave of civilizations that have made me. Unclouded Olympus, flameless hell. The will of the gods that write our destiny is all there is. We call It constellations.
II
After the storm the squads go down to the beach. They begin their covetous ritual by the sea. They search for treasures the sea returns. They use canes to divine, poles to dig, sticks to draw scars. The sea in peaceful sluggishness washes it all away. They won’t be able to steal my white necklace for holiday mornings.
III
At night I can hear the neighing come closer. Every breaker roars nearer in a dark tone. I surrender to darkness. I let myself be rocked by the hidden rustle of who knows what song.
IV
It’s light. The crash of the gallop stirs the white mane of fury. Whirlpools speckle the blue sunrise with a symphony of white.
V
Horses or necklace. Who am I, of the two? A garden with two shadows. Mimosa, bougainvillia, lavender and rose, cypress and tamarisk. Evening and dawn. Sand and reef. Peeble and dune. Algae and shell. Delta, cove, lichen. I am both.

VI
Every moonlit night a smiling spill of glass is born. It crosses the sea by way of the wrinkles at the four corners of the sheets. The silver trail follows me down the unsteady path, shattering the neckless as I start off. I am drenched in coveted light. I do not fear the sleeping horses in dark waters.
VII
Coral and amber. The choice of treasure. Coral and amber. The blood of trees at sea. The gold ore of light imprisoned in the entrails of rocks. I return coral and amber to their hiding place.
VIII
Hundreds of thousands of tiny mirrors broken into millions of particles drank up only a hundredth of their share of light. Day and night light shines into them. The small necklaces are made by the water, in time to the breathing that makes them shine like a goodbye.
IX
I am carried away by the wild gallop of the waves that charge against the plain. Spindrift, confluence, whirls. Ice sparks of shattered water. Within the galloping, neighing and jumping. Fleeting light. The open grave is at every moment.
X
The sea always returns what it prefers not to keep. It selfishly chooses its materials. It builds hidden gardens and cities. And from time to time it falls in love. A woman, a child, a young boy. Love and wisdom. Unlove and despair. Joy and deceit. And it calls them in a deep voice that only those who will listen can hear. With the enticing sparkle of the moon it carries them away towards the clash of manes. Horses and necklace.
XI
Horses and necklace. Coral and amber. Spill of glass and sand mirrors. Am I the two? I am.

Presència de la mort

Clementina Arderiu

Dóna bo la llum:
dintre de la cambra,
tot el verd i el rosa
jugaven a fet.
Manyac entra el sol
de les deu tocades.
D' esperança l' aire
duia penjarolls,
que de Sant Joan
era la vigília,
i jo n'era tota
bandera d' estiu.
Somrigué l' infant
a l'adéu del pare
i entre roba càndida
restava tranquil.
I ella va venir...
La cambra vibrava;
ja tota em prenia
el trast matinal.
I ella va venir,
callada, insensible.
I jo no la veia
colpir el meu infant.
Entre tanta llum,
qui l' endevinava?
Fou la galta pàl·lida
que em digué la mort.

Presence of death

The light was wholesome:
within the room
the green and pink
played hide-and-seek.
The gentle sun
came in at ten.
The air was filled
with little garlands
because it was
the day before St. John’s
and I was all
summer’s flag.
The baby smiled
to father’s goodbye
and lay in peace
under guileless covers.
And then he came...
The room was astir;
fully engrossed
by morning chores.
And then he came,
silent, unfeeling.
I didn’t see him
strike my baby.
Amidst so much light
who would have known?
The colorless cheek
told me death.

Book beings

A few nuts with poems on the brain can’t hurt the city.
               Ray Bradbury

There is no weapon against time.
Books know that, yellowing they fall apart
with the touch of insect slobber.
The memory of books, who keeps it?
In the mirror of centuries
writing engenders larva eyes
a great festival of pages
where the taste of ink goes unnoticed.
In the mirror of time
blackbirds fly
that devour worms page by page.
After that come wolves and hawks
like blood shadows on the shelves.
In the mirror of centuries
more time is needed.
We don’t have shields either to defend
the old honor codes of reading.
In day’s mirror
night lives.
Perhaps what will live on will be our choice
of the granite bookplate,
the scent of the tombstone,
whether we read from within or from without,
whether we wish to die in verse or prose.
Make a lesson in aesthetics out of life.

Cullereta

Eduard Sanahuja

Navego amb el vaixell
dins de la tassa de cafè.
Pengen del sostre
les garlandes pansides
de l’oblit.
En el mar més petit
també hi viu el naufragi.
S’hi enfonsa
com un terrós de sucre
l’esperança.
En el mar més petit
els noms dels mariners
s’escriuen amb minúscula
i el cafè és més amarg
que la bilis del temps.
Tot allò que he estimat
s’ho emporta una cullera
i va a parar a una boca
que no ha après a besar.

Coffee spoon

I sail with my ship
in the coffee cup.
Wilted garlands
of oblivion hang
from the ceiling.
In the tiniest sea
sea wrecks can live.
Hope happens
to sink like
a sugar cube.
In the tiniest sea
the names of sailors
are in small letters
and the coffee stronger
than the bile of time.
All things I loved
were carried by a spoon
to an open mouth
that hasn’t learned to kiss.

Preferències

Eduard Sanahuja

Li atreia l’enigma
dels llocs inaccessibles,
la foscor dels conductes
estrets dels formiguers,
aquells llocs on qui regna
enterra el grans misteris.
Però quan la fatiga
ha castigat els ulls,
quan les taules s’aguanten sense potes
i a la cuina es cou només el fum,
els somnis prefereixen la claror,
la transparència
aquella que hi havia
en el terrat, amb la roba eixugant-se
com un fantasma tou,
quan el món era enorme,
quan arreu s’hi cabia;
la transparència
d’allò que és comprensible
quan ja no és necessari entendre res.

Preferences

He was attracted by the enigma
of inaccessible places,
the dark and narrow
passages of ant colonies,
places where those who reign
bury great mysteries.
Yet when fatigue
has strained your eyes,
when tables stand without legs
and only smoke is cooked in the kitchen,
dreams prefer brightness,
that translucency
to be found
on the flatroof, with the drying clothes
like a mild ghost,
when the world was huge,
when there was room everywhere;
the transparency
of what is comprehensible
when it is no longer necessary to understand anything.

Pigues

Eduard Sanahuja

Tu encara ets
aquell mirall on uns ulls poden viure.

Moles

He rose his eyes toward the stars,
and they, so charmed with such beauty,
began to totter and all fell, one by one,
upon his cheek, where, in envy,
I saw them all turn black, one by one.
                Ibn al-Labbana from Dènia

Someone said
the moles on your back
were darkened stars.
That is beauty: a bunch of signs
that lights the dark in caverns.
But time has passed, that knows how to deepen art
at the cost of life.

All things have been changed, even us.
All things proclaim
the savage ritual of twilight.
You are still
that mirror where some eyes can live.
I am only
what remains of night among your moles.

Don’t be afraid of me
or the flint
I hide in my pocket.
Remember this when you look at me:
the oldest forests are the ones that blaze
and nights are never made to anyone’s measure.

Teoria de la perplexitat

Eduard Sanahuja

l’alfals,
la trona,
un rumiant que gesta setze mesos,
els mugrons de l’escola,
beure i menjar,
que visquis per parlar,
que sigui ara.
Que tothom hagi mort
molt abans d’hora.

Theory of perplexity

This natural world is not natural.
Everything is strange.
You knew that when you got
your first neck slap.
There’s nothing like when they shake your brain
to see that things are uneasiness.
Then you feel it’s strange to take a first step,
pus,
alfalfa,
highchairs,
ruminants taking sixteen months to breed,
nipples at school,
eating and drinking,
that you live to speak,
that it is now.
That everyone has died
before their time.
Don’t ever say nature is wise.

Teoria amb el bes

Eduard Sanahuja

Mira.
Mira’m.
Et demano que em besis.
El bes no ens salvarà,
però ens identifica.

Theory of kisses

Look.
Everything you see now,
frogs from the Seychelles,
lemurs cowering when the wind stirs,
lilies among thorns,
slim mongooses,
desert roses crackling under the sands,
all this beauty
was not made by love.
Love came late to the universe.
It’s a recent invention of men and women,
a rare substance
we discharge in vain.
Universes kiss poorly,
the same as swords
and for that reason life
is the dumb sister of death.
Love will not become the leavening of stars
nor will it slake the thirst of pastures.
Nevertheless, humans kiss
and some are real masters
at intravenous kisses.
I know well enough what kisses are,
the last evolutionary stage of bites,
an attempt to deny
the voracious cruelty of jaws,
an attempt to forget
mouths die in the end.
Look at me.
I ask you to kiss me.
Kisses won’t save us,
but they make us what we are.

Carregat amb l'escorça del record...

Eduard Sanahuja

The galley slave’s dog

Burdened with the bark of remembrance
the vanquished man flees the light of day
the whimpering dog sniffing rocks on the way
using his bloody feet as he goes astray

It was the enslavement of jealousy
the darkness of deep ruts the misfortune
the slave dog the nor’easter searching
for death consigns bones to a deep pit

can you hear the dog calling crouched
over the body of the only certainty?
lonely bereft fool bites the flight of fate

night the love dance of the princess
every raving fang shields and protects
the universal right to suffer sadness

T'estimo per activa i per passiva

Eduard Sanahuja

I love you backwards and forwards

I love you backwards and forwards
and with verbal stress on inflections.
I love you under beds and over tables,
at the end of doors and balconies.
Behind the mirror I love you as well
and when Caesars go past their Rubicons, when humans nurture their promises, when animals walk over the world.
You see how things go: I love you.
It’s as simple as making up a name,
it’s as straightforward, as obvious,
the same as there are men alive and dead.

Teoria de la veritat

Eduard Sanahuja

Ja no és vidre trencat
ni l’ostra en el mirall.
No hi ha una veritat per majoria.
Només el que no saps
és veritat.

Theory of truth

Truth was an eye viewing a map,
oxen opening paths as they tread,
lizards learning about fly eggs,
worms laying lumps in intestines.
Truth no longer depends on you.

There is no truth by majority.
Only what you don’t know
is the truth.

Jo em donaria a qui em volgués

Josep Palau i Fabre

Jo em donaria a qui em volgués
com si ni jo me n'adonés
d'aquest donar-me: com si ho fes
un jo de mi que m'ignorés.

Jo em donaria a qui es donés
a canvi meu per sempre més:
que res de meu no me'n quedés
en el no meu que jo en rebés.

Jo em donaria per un bes,
per un de sol, prô que besés
i del besat em desbesés.

Jo em donaria a qui em volgués
com si ni jo me n'adonés:
com una almoina que se'm fes.

I’d give myself to whoever cared

I’d give myself to whoever cared,
as if not even I happened to notice
this giving myself; as if it were done
by a me of myself I simply ignored.

I’d give myself to one who did the same
in exchange for me forever more:
that nothing of myself would remain
in the non-I I chanced to receive.

I’d give myself for just a kiss,
one single kiss, that would kiss
and from the kissed unkiss me.

I’d give myself to whoever cared
as if not even I happened to notice:
like a coin given to me in charity.

La mort sobrevivent

Josep Palau i Fabre

i esdevenir un mateix vivent cadàver;
mirar amb ull gèlid el passat on neix

el futur ja marcit de l’esperança.
Estrangular el futur amb el passat,
orfes de temps i orfes d’eternitat.

Death, the survivor

There is a way of thinking death
in which death itself clutches us
as if we ourselves were memory
and he were to think and command.

There is a way of thinking death
living it long before the shroud,
feeling the cold pollen in our hearts
and being the heart of death as well.

Seeing them father and son of oneself
and becoming onself a living corpse;
staring at the past with frozen eyes
where the future is born of withered hope.

Strangling the future with the past,
orphans of time and the everlasting.

La mort

Josep Palau i Fabre

de ben a prop, i sense fer-me mal,
m’esfilarà sencer per la mirada.

Death

We’ve come across each other so often,
neither should be surprised in the least
by one last exchange of glances between us
in an area of time, strange and mysterious:

he, reabsorbing the intricate caverns
of all my husky and coarse being,
and I, lost, with my roots upright
toward a colorless time in space.

He, possessed of his suitable skill,
will show me, full of light, the chest
where I will resume my lethal sleep.

And with a burning, dilated pupil,
at very close quarters, unharmful,
he will thread me whole with his look.

Comiat

Josep Palau i Fabre

¿On podré dir, on podré deixar dit, on podré inscriure
morint-me?
La resta són paraules...
Res no sabré ja escriure de millor.
Massa a prop de la vida visc.
Els mots se’m moren a dins
i jo visc en les coses.

Goodbye

I no longer know how to write, I no longer know how to write anymore.
Ink clots all over my hands, in my veins...
—I have left on paper all my blood.

Where can I say, where can I leave said, where can I inscribe
the pulp of the golden fruit but in the fruit,
the storm in my blood but in my blood,
the tree and the wind but in the wind through a tree?
Where can I say death but in my own death,
as I am dying?
The rest is words.
Nothing better will I know how to write.
I live far too close to life.
Words are dying inside me
and I am living in all things.

La sabata

Josep Palau i Fabre

The Shoe

I gave my heart to a fallen woman.
It was rotting in my hands. Who would have wanted it?
At trash dumps an old discarded shoe
attracts us the same and seems a partly hidden treasure.

All refined young girls that wander around me
haven't had the strength to give me the comfort
that an embrace gives, because men don't cry
with their eyes, they cry with their sex and it's sad to cry alone.

I want all my relatives and female friends to know:
Josep Palau is no angel nor is he a role model.
If they had a pretty image of me,
now I offer them the naked truth.

I want no more fiction in my life.
That masquerade has lasted far too long.
Since you are disgusted by my festering wound,
I leave my shoe on the junk heap.

Capítol en blanc

Josep Palau i Fabre

El blanc es fa desitjar. La violació comença. ¿Deixar a no deixar el
blanc?

Chapter in White

White arouses desire. Rape begins. To leave or
not to leave white alone? But to leave it alone is
always to leave it to someone else. All blank spaces
are from me, for you or the first person to come
along. A blank canvas, a blank page, a blank letter.
Everything is possible. Everything hides behind
white. White is always metallic, steely and hurts
your eyes. A line of poetry on a page, a blot on a
letter, a color on a canvas, are elementary, essen-
tial and necessary functions. But one line of verse
requires another, one sentence begs another, one
color alone with white is incestupus, provocative,
offensive, immoral. It is too ostensibly copulation.
Who is white primarily addressed to? To none of
them: white is always directed at our sex. White
must be raped. There the red spot stays it blood,
the blue one says its sea or the green its insides.
We must fight against the inhumanity of white
until we make it cry, make it sigh, make it reveal all
its secrets, force it to strip. Then perhaps it will
tell us in a desapairing tone about nights spent
by the fireside waiting in sadness among the
gray tones of a hand. Or we will know of
a passion muttered between teeth without even a
piece of bread to chew, or it will reveal, in a low
whisper, that clear morning concealed under
the arch of an eyebrow.
There is no Grecian marble behind white.

Cant espiritual

Josep Palau i Fabre

I parlo contra tu
que no ets ningú. I parlo mal de tu com si fossis algú.
¿Quan, Senyor, estic despert, i quan sóc adormit?
Fes que sens fi, i sense paraules, tot
el meu ésser pugui dir-te:
Ets.

Spiritual Canticle

I do not believe in you, Lord, but I have such a
need of believing in you that I often speak and
plead with you as if you existed.

I have such a need of you, Lord, a need of your
existing, that I come to believe in you – and believe
that I believe in you when I believe in no one.

Yet afterwards I awaken, or think that I awaken,
and I feel ashamed of my weakness and detest you.
And I speak out against you who are no one. And
I speak poorly of you as if you were someone.

When, Lord, am I awake, and when am I asleep?
When am I most awake and when most
asleep? Is it not all sleep and life, whether awake
or asleep, a dream? Will I awaken some day from
this double sleep and, far from here, lead the real
life where sleeplessness and sleep are but a lie?

I do not believe in you, Lord, but if you exist, I
cannot give you the best of me if it is not in this
fashion: by telling you I do not believe in you.
What a strange and harsh form of love! How it
hurts me not to be able to tell you: I believe.

I do not believe in you, Lord, but if you exist,
lead me away from this delusion once and for all;
make me see your face clearly! Do not bear malice
against me for my small-minded love. Enable my
whole being, endlessly and wordlessly, to say to
you: You exist.

El primer amor

Josep Palau i Fabre

First love

You have to attack read head on with a sword,
Hurt him. Remind him that our whole life depends
On him. That we are bull and cape.
Scarlet or red, what difference does it make?
Red is red to the point of madness.
Perhaps we are looking at blue, but we always
embrace red.
Put red on a wound so it bleeds.
Red tolerates no other color. He kills anyone
That gets in his way, like bulls. Red is a bull. Bulls
Are red.
Red is the only color that looks at us face to
Face; not askance , like yellow or with its eyes
lowered, like purple.
Or hope is red: hypocrites, when we say it’s
green!
Imagine red with a sword in his hand.
I ran out of red on my first love.

Va ser una nit

i ens exhortava a fer-ho
l’himne antic de les herbes humides.

Ella no deia res, bleixava fort.
A poc a poc la mà va amorosir-se
i no hi tenia ungles ni suor.
Va deturar-se, i en un lloc estrany,
on la mort no hi era ni hi seria,
tornàrem cap a casa.

It was one night

It was one night.
Let’s go die, mother said.
She held my hand tight.
I followed her, submissive, well linked
to the love and womb that led me
to be reborn from the pain of woman.

We walked with the whim of the wind
to the sinister quarry
across the preliminary fields of suicide
and the ancient hymn of damp grass
encouraged us to do it.

She said nothing, she was breathing heavily.
Little by little her hand softened;
it was warm and had no nails.
She stopped, and in a strange place
where death wasn’t to be found then or ever,
she kissed my forehead; she begged me, forgive me,
and retracing our path under the stars
we went back home.

Quan ja saps

Màrius Sampere

Quan ja saps
que cada rostre és un marbre
musical, que la nit
no és la por de la llum, que l’ull obert
de la finestra no mira
enlloc i que no té
pes el pes,

¿què hi fas, encara,
a escola
aprenent de lletra; dures, gruixudes
guixades de carbó
amb sang a les parets?

When you already know

When you already know
every face is musical
marble, night
is not the fear of light, window’s
open eyes look
nowhere and weight
is weightless,

what are you still doing then
at school
learning to write: rough, thick
coal marks
in blood on the walls?

Ofici

Craft

I would like to write
the kindest and plainest lines,
like blameless poets know how to,
avoiding excesses, dissonance,
without falling into the trap of perverse words,
with the slight restriction of not compromising
a soul or a name. I want to write like they do.

(With thin neat fingertips
they hold the infallible quill,
and they don’t scratch but caress
the white skin of the page; the thrill
of pleasure will be the poem
the world awaited.)

I want to write like they do, with that fine
nib of warmth. We would skip over
the details of suffocations, the love of butchers,
the fat on capital letters, man’s instinctive
certainty: I will die.
We would celebrate only
certain beauty, certain dim regions.

And then, put our hearts away
in the drawer for well-oiled tools,
and await,
like the just, the coming
of immortality.

Pare, el dolor

t’ho hauríem dit millor sense sanglots;
la teva casa llunya
l’hauríem trobada, també, només pujant.

La llum de la finestra eterna
rere la qual llegeixes desvetllat, per esperar-nos,
el llibre dels nascuts,
era prou resplendent dalt del turó i la nit
perquè no ens desviéssim mai
i t’arribéssim al cercle magnànim del sopar
amb la puntualitat exacta de la mort. No, Pare,
el dolor no calia.

Father, pain

Father, pain was uncalled-for,
so were punitive needles, the gnashing
of teeth in life, cold seats,
phosphoric tumors and wounds
that spread like a lake at night.

What you wanted to hear from our lips
we would have said better without sobbing;
we would have found
your distant home, also, by just rising.

The light in the eternal window
behind which you wait up for us reading
the book of the born
was bright enough on the hilltop at night
so that we would have never lost our way
and reached the magnanimous circle for supper
as strictly punctual as death. No, Father,
pain was uncalled-for.

Origen

Màrius Sampere

He sortit d’un vell calaix
                                                                                                  i limfa.

Quin gran bé
l’origen humil,
comú,
impersonal, rudimentari!

Origin

I came out of an old drawer
full of rags, little washcloths mother
used to use to dry her tender marble thighs soaked in blood and lymph.

What a great thing
a humble, common,
impersonal, rudimentary origin!
Whoever claims
he’s the son of kings or God
doesn’t understand the nobility
of primary matter, the dark majesty of springs,
the delicacy of burning pain, the repressed love of a stain,
the spiritual outburst of moth balls.

I close my eyes,
I revive sheltered by memories;
the immutable scribe records
on our pages of life
the soul’s absolute zero.

La data d’avui

o pluja d’obstacles. Mira,
ja es fa clar! Ho veus?, no universos
analfabets, jutges, doctors, frares
de la meva escola enderrocada.

Per tant, no fer, refer.
I no refer, estrenar. Cal un altre món,
una altra circumferència, l’anell suprem
de la indignitat. Qui el porta
no mor: morirà,
i no haurà acabat la feina encomanada.

Encara faltarà afegir-hi
els jardins i els enigmes.
Tots els fabricants d’agulles.

Today’s date

Today’s date, the moment takes us by surprise,
The preacher announces
That everything has yet to be done.

Just alter the instant, an avalanche
or barrage of obstacles. Look,
it’s growing light! Can you see? no universes
are granted, oh no, people.
Life regained, life disappearing,
the illiterate, judges, doctors, brothers
from my demolished school.

Thus, not making, remaking.
And not remaking, inaugurating. We need another world,
another circumference, the supreme ring
of indignity. He who wears it
will not perish: he will die,
and will not have finished the work he was asked to do.

We must also add
Gardens and enigmas.
All the manufacturers of pins.

Illa

Antoni Vidal Ferrando

Island

Rosa, to draw you an island roughly,
with words and heliotropes, I have to break the bands of pride.
From this moment, I become the follower of one who hears the rain
fall between your legs. Because the gods are generous
like the rain’s face or perhaps the eggplant purple
texture and grain of the place where days breaks I can write
this poem for you. Outside is the rhythm of silence, grim
biblical storytellers and luck as powerful
as the assault or metal fingers solitude; there are
melancholy musicians on posters that lacerate the moon,
chaos enthroned by winter: the dead hands
of insects, leather and snowy mimosas from the last
battles for the sake of certainty, cemeteries
and snake charmers at the crimson hour we returned
home as the flower markets opened.
But we, Rosa, are already far away, at sea,
and everything has the epic sense of two weightless bodies
- angels, white wine, saliva – desperately
loving each other on the four cardinal points
of the bedspread, on the way to dawn: beauty and the short-lives

Cada cor és un minut

amb agulles de judici, tot això i res
que ho permet i s’ho estima.

Però, Déu meu, a quin preu, a quin preu,
el brevíssim permís d’estimar!

Every heart is a minute

Every heart is a minute that lasts
as long as a lifetime; every life,
a heart that beats during one brief minute.
That’s how we drink up the years: just one gulp
of milk, the first one. The others were spilt.

The silent football of clouds the wind
carries away to where memory ceases,
the insect that ignores it’s lightning, the clock of evil
with hands of judgement, all this and nothing
is worth one blue span of the mercy
that allows for it and wants it.

But, my God, what a price, what a price,
the extremely brief permission to love!

Des del santuari de Consolació

Antoni Vidal Ferrando

Entr a la clastra buida. Jocs de faroles, ecos que anuncien la
posta.
on regna un arxipèlag. Ens farem vells i pàmfils i maldestres, amor meu.

From the Sanctuary of Consolation

I enter the empty cloister. The display of lights is the echo before sundown.
Now everything becomes less skin-deep. My eyes search for the fire, the
slang of the pain below. Dunes and the powerful territory of clouds are the
heaven and earth of the places where we have been happy. I think of your
mint waist, the distance, where an archipelago reigns. We will grow old and
sentimental and clumsy, my love.

Com m’agrada

How I enjoy

How I enjoy writing in a language
they say is dying.
What a feeling of peace and relief
to carry it down to the source of springs,
the shady groin, the blessed woman
of early lights.

She spread her sex and I opened my eyes
and read this on the bleeding walls:
I will speak!
And now I say, now that I know all there is
about love and thieves,
the deeper the death, the deeper in earth.

PERÒ...

Margarita Ballester

Dimonis infantils!
Tant com us he estimat heu escrit

BUT...

I was in the transparency of my elders’ veils.
I trampled the frailest flowers
in my eagerness to hide.
And in the silver laugh from the flute of Pan.
Childhood demons!
As much as I have loved you you have written
the secret music for me to stay with you.
Death never again
if I should stay with you.

But...
I am on my way –my small child–
to make you afraid and take revenge,
as I saw it through my elders’ veils:
Only the wind will tell the secret rustling
the leaves that sense is coming.

                                 amb llàgrimes

sense un gest
sense mots per a dir

GOODBYE

I have lost words
now that you are dead.
                                            Now
now that you have died
I have been left
with nothing, like a baby
at birth, far from you
                                        naked
screaming
                   crying
                               full of tears
but speechless
no gestures
no words to say
I love you
                  I have you
                                    I carry you
with me
a living part of memory

sota columnes d’heura ennuvolades.
Així serà que no escriurem el curs

Restaré als cercles sota neus adverses

[I WILL DRAW CIRCLE IN OBSIDIAN]

I will draw circles in obsidian,
section by section, tracing the dark verbs,
when the day will be the last day
among gluttonous beasts
with moonlit hooves
that will want to love
the life of one single line of verse,
a benefit of undamaged compasses
under columns of cloud-capped ivy.
That’s how we won’t come to chart
the course of bustling rivers.
I will stay inside the circles under adverse snow
and abolish the sea that sets me ablaze,
desolate pencil of the chasm.

[SENYOR, NO M’ABANDONIS A L’AMOR]

Susanna Rafart

Senyor, no m’abandonis a l’amor

Senyor, no m’abandonis a l’amor,
amb braços hi aniria fent de barca
vaixell fosc de jacints pel teu enyor
i no em sabria greu al front la marca.

Senyor, no m’abandonis a l’amor:

Senyor, no m’abandonis a l’amor,
el cor serà jardí desfet de dàlies
i si és la teva voluntat favor
que esberli en el camí velles sandàlies

dóna’m del tot el vi del meu valor,
que cap aurora no em desperti més,
i siguin els teus ulls primer temor
i sigui el teu silenci el meu decés.

[LORD, DO NOT GIVE ME OVER TO LOVE]

Lord, do not give me over to love
your law is powerful but I’m dragged away,
through the bushes, by the dogs of fear.
I have no idea of the evil such dangers entail.

Lord, do not give me over to love,
to play boat with my arms until I got there
a dark vessel of hyacinths for your longing
and I wouldn’t mind the mark on my forehead.

Lord, do not give me over to love:
I have hands turned into fiery mirrors,
I expect no elixir from life,
her silk no longer clothes me.

Lord, do not give me over to love
my heart is a plundered dahlia garden
and if your will shows favor
may it split open old sandals on the road

grant me all the wine of my courage,
that no more dawns should ever wake me
and your eyes should be first fear
and your silence my dying.

[LIKE THAT KNIFE SHE WANTED AS A CHILD]

Like that knife she wanted as a child,
a folding blade and a beautiful red handle,
with her name engraved. It has traveled the years
chasing her in dreams: narrow beechwood arrows

Now older, she whets the blade, gained from the unforgotten,
to chop down the weeds that choke her memories.

BELLA DAMA CONEGUDA

Marta Pessarrodona

Us veig en una foto antiga:
éreu jove i bella
i dúieu el poeta, aleshores
infant en braços.

L’escena era bonica
i amagava el déu salvatge:
divinitat a bastament venerada
per vós i la vostra nissaga.

El meu record d’aquella tarda
— d’aquella foto esgrogueïda—
us fa amb un bell capell i un avió
— de quan en deien aeroplà— de paisatge.

M’apreciàreu perquè jo l’estimava
i jo us volia per estimar-lo,
per fer més dares unes ombres
que m’enterbolien certes imatges.

També us hauria volgut salvar,
com a ell, de les grapes inevitables.
Volia tornar-vos al retrat on ell
era innocent i vós jove i mundana.

Tots dos desapareguéreu sense acomiadar-vos,
deixant-me només el record,
aquest caos on he de cercar, sola,
les persones per estimar-vos.

BELLE DAME CONNUE

I see you in an old photograph:
you were young and beautiful
and you held the poet, then
an infant, in your arms.

The scene was glamorous
and concealed the savage god:
a deity worshipped to the full
by you and yours.

My memory of that afternoon
—of that sallow photograph—
has you in a beautiful hat with an airplane
—when they were called aeroplanes— as a backdrop.

You were fond of me because I loved him
and I clung to you to go on loving him,
to shed light on shadows
that had dimmed certain images.

I would have liked to save you,
the same as him, from the avoidless jaws.
I wanted to put you back into that picture he
was hurtless and you, young and worldly.

You both disappeared without saying goodbye,
leaving my only memories,
this chaos where, all alone, I must find
the people to love the two of you through.

ANNA GORENKO

Marta Pessarrodona

Després, sense el teu talent,
totes hem estat, més o menys,
mig monges i mig putes,

t’hem de retre homenatge;
més encara pel teu vers,
d’agulles tan daurades;
per la teva saviesa,
que ni les traïcions amaguen.

També perquè t’han cantat més
que tots els versos que vas escriure;
tan gelosos, que volien imrnortalitzar-te
amb llapis i pinzells i cameras;

i perquè sempre seràs
tan lluny i tan a prop
de les nostres conquestes,
de les nostres davallades.

Després, sense el teu talent,
totes ens hem sentit com tu,
mig monges i mig putes,
tants dies, tan repetides vegades.

Ever since, without your latent,
we have all been, more or less,
half nun and half harlot,
half cloistered, half streetwalker.

We haven’t had your sense of shame:
we lack the cleverness
of the secret surname,
the talent of a loud-sounding mask.

My poet didn’t value
white peacocks,
religious music,
or crumpled maps.

Like yours, however,
screaming children annoyed him,
and he didn’t crave after tea and jam
or hysterical ladies.

Our time, for sure,
has not been as pathetic as yours.
This is why, perhaps,
we must pay homage to you;

even more for your poems,
of such golden pins;
for your wisdom,
not even betrayals could conceal.

Also because they have sung more lines
to you than you ever wrote yourself;
so jealous, they wanted to immortalize you
with pencils, brushes and cameras;

and because you will always be
so far away and yet so close
to our victories,
to our downfalls.

Ever since, without your talent,
we have all felt like you,
half nun, half harlot,
so many days, on so many repeated occasions
