Agi Mishol

*

[Pacing in the kitchen]

*

Pacing in the kitchen
a zen monk’s pose

a toast in hand
lettuce in the other

presuming not to know
the known

dreaming to change
into what I already am

Translated by Shachar Beer

Agi Mishol

Between the trees and the not-trees

Not going anywhere.
Too shaky to yank
from my contacts
and the laziness in me yearns to persist
in it’s position
continue to live in it’s familiar space
late afternoon
on the stoop
when imagination is content
and my huntsman eyes rest
in the recesses of my head.

Why get up suddenly walk
come stir
over a fragrant orchard whose breath
I breath -

A palm and a perpendicular erase from the sky
words that remained after love left
and the crows calm as well one by one
into the pine like the blood
into the quiet,
thought doesn’t covet
it’s content
and I am only present here
between the trees and the not-trees

my door is open wide
and the soft night invited into the house -

Agi Mishol

Song for the incomplete man

Flawed as he is, loved and pitied as he
just as he is, angry and torn
hungry thirsty groaning wanting and circling
above the abyss,
a song for the man shunned not ushered
from the dreams of night to the dreams of day
gurgling gargling groping for his shoes
as he is, with his grumbling bowels
discharging something, that is soon to be
wandering and pondering love’s hunger
bad bad love’s hunger
much coffee won’t put it out, this is
a song for his thoughts’ weakening stream
as he is, trivial, staring
pinched upwards longing and yearning
towards something, a song for his wound
not gushing
for his quiet knotted insult, for the cigarette
on which he now leans
sitting down at his desk
turning finally to a silence
this is a song for his pristine pages, a kiss
for his eyes that have found solace in cushions of clouds.

Agi Mishol

Nocturne

In the house
everything is stored:
sugar in the jar,
bread
in the bread box,
knife in the drawer,
stew in the pot,
evil spirits
in the curtain folds,
one atop another
bedsheets
pillowcases
panties
bras,
everything is stored:
music in record furrows
a rat in the attic
of discarded items.

b.
If she would rise from her bed
and open the fridge,
her face will appear,
her gaze will appear
in the cheese gazing back from its holes,
but in this dim light,
we see her gaping hunger
for a different light
and not the flickering blue
from the television
and not the red beaming
from the alarm clock
or the moon’s neon
glittering her heart’s chandelier.
Needs
a different light
in the night, waiting like a black leather chair
to swallow her.

c.
It is not by chance that I stand at night
leaning over the sink
manning my post
singing away
a drifting rowboat

because everything
that can
leaves the ground:
chimney smoke,
a prayer,
leaps of joy

yet all in the house breathe like a flock
sleeping in their room, god is their shepherd

and under the house, ground water
and under the ground
molten core of fatigue.
