TONG

Tsead Bruinja

wat ik wens
een helder hart
voor een donkere nacht
oren die stoppen met huilen
luisteren naar het dommelende schip
lied dat weer aan lippen
toekomt

er zingt een trein
door dit modderige landschap
door deze grijze lucht
er zingt een trein
aan weerszijden
van het doorkruiste
groeit gestaag
de stapel
witte veren

tong wat is je beroep
riet in de saxofoonmond
twijfelhart in rode torsowond
tango die in bloedhoofd woont

tong wat is je beroep
tong zeg dat afstand vorm is
tong hef op

TONGUE

what I wish
a lucid heart
for a darkened night
ears that stop crying
listen to the drowsy boat
song that once again
reaches lips

there is a train singing its way
through this muddy landscape
through this grey sky
there is a train singing
on either side
of the traversed
the heap
of white feathers
steadily growing

tongue what is your profession
reed in saxophone mouth
doubtful heart in red torso wound
tango living in blood-head

tongue what is your profession
tongue tell me distance is form
tongue remove

Moeder

Peter Ghyssaert

Moeder, ingekuild tussen de meubels
en het porselein, komt nog maar moeizaam
boven hout, mummelt sterfberichten

uit haar schrale rinkelende borst;
schouderbladen van verdriet geblakerd
breken uit de rug te voorschijn.

Langzaam groeien kinderen weg
van haar schoot waarin onvruchtbaarheid
werd afgeworpen.

Dor is moeder, oud machien.
Herinnering hangt als een teder lint
van ingebruikname dwars door haar heen, maar
niemand krijgt haar nog in gang of weet
waartoe ze dient.

Mother

Mother, clamped between the furniture
and porcelain, it pains her now to rise
out of the wood, mutters obituaries
of women friends.

She arranges volumes of plush in the cupboard
and coughs the final scrap of warmth
up from her gaunt and rattling breast;
shoulder blades of sun-baked sadness
break out into the open from her back.

The children slowly outgrow
her lap where infertility
was borne.

Mother, barren old machine.
Memories suspended like a tender ribbon
at an opening, straight through her, but
no-one can get her started or knows what
her purpose is.

Sneeuwboekhouding

Peter Ghyssaert

Zó doen zij boekhouding in smalle
nagemaakt; hun ogen zullen
sneeuwt het, wens ik, op u in;
aan vederlichte last ontkomt u niet.
Tenzij iemand van boven af begint.

Snow Accounts

My parents sit before the dark-blue window
of another indefinable winter, and
I think, let them sit there; the snow,
that brought the flurry like a healing tincture
right up to the frosted glass, still fails
to frighten them, is counted up in peace,
and all that falls slow-motion, softly
takes their thoughts one at a time.
This is how they keep accounts, in narrow
fields of white before their eyes.
When thaw sets in I will have copied
all the flakes they must account for,
with this verse; their eyes will see
without distinction all the words which are
repeatedly fluffed up, a journey that
most definitely ends down here while
different each time. I’ll move this Lourdes
under glass for you; my writing is in motion
is in prayer; my snow can sink in hostile
waters every time and brusquely rise up
from the ground. Shortly, when my parents
turn away in disillusion from the window,
they may enter into this small chaos and
forever falter in its motion, whereas now
this poem is for you, the warm cave
in the middle is for you – I hope
it snows on you from every side;
you won’t escape the airy burden.
Unless someone takes it from the top.

Honingtuin

Peter Ghyssaert

Hij betast de raten en bekijkt ze,
sprenkelt witte rook over de bijen, rooft
zonder pijn van honderdduizend angels
zoete, voorgekauwde hompen: de vermolmde
schatten uit de honingtuin;
-witte, ongekwetste was in potten,
dun gemaakte honing voor de glazen-
en omheinen met hun zwarte keurtroepen
de tuin tegen van angst gekrompen velden
waar het stil geworden is, doodstil;

Honey garden

He feels the combs and watches them,
then drips white smoke across the bees, steals
from a hundred thousand stings without a pang
pre-chewed, sweet chunks: the mouldered
treasures from the honey garden;
quiet and grim he is, a bee smith,
and he fits the armour of his bees
with simple, lasting sugared water:
they bring him profits in wax and honey
– white and unbruised wax in jars,
diluted honey for the glasses –
and fence in the garden with their black
shock troops against the fear-shrunk fields
where it’s gone quiet, deathly quiet;
unimaginable without the soft buzzing
of a constant and sublime homage.

Johannes Brahms

Peter Ghyssaert

in elke klank, tot scherp profiel gewet;
hij heeft dat alles op muziek gezet
en, ondanks vriendschap die zij hem toekent
vermeerderd met het eigen complement,
de vorming van perikelen belet;
woord en weerwoord kunnen in muziek
voor eeuwig blijven klinken zonder schade,
onder sterk vernis wordt kleurrijk woeden
langzaam tot pijnloos, verstild klassiek
waarin de passie, mag men wel vermoeden,
zich gepast ontdoet van Clara Wieck.

Johannes Brahms

She has bent his flowers to her will:
her voice sounds clearly in this instrument,
her eyes and hair are both apparent
in each sound, honed to a sharp profile;
he has adapted these with music skills
and, while her play to amity testament
increased by his own complement,
prevented the creation of perils;
tort and retort can in music
keep resounding without harm,
below thick varnish richly varied rage
in time become the painless, quiet classic
in which the passion, one might gauge,
disposes itself suitably of Clara Wieck.

Eiken

Peter Ghyssaert

Eiken zijn de bomen van het dies irae;
als de grond breekt zullen zij,
over het land gezaaiden, toekijken
met een oud, houten gezicht
dat onbewogen blijft:

te veel stormwind is in
hun taaie takkenkroon verstard;
zij zijn niet meer verstoord
door groei, dat eeuwenoud tumult
en in hun stilstand glanst niets op
van minachting, van deernis
met het oude land,
alleen geduld.

En vliegen dan de zielen der geredden
als briljante edelgassen
naar hun maker; schieten verdoemden,
brandend van de diarree, voorbij
koude, ijzerharde wortels
dieper in de grond:

zij hebben het gezien,
zij hebben het gehoord,
zij doen niet mee.

Oaks

Oaks are the trees of the dies irae;
when the ground breaks up they will,
sown out across the land, look on
with ancient, wooden faces
that remain unmoved:

too many gales have frozen
in their hardened crown of boughs;
they are no longer vexed
by growth, that age-old turmoil;
from their standstill not a glimmer
of contempt, of pity
for the old country,
just patience.

If then the saved ones’ souls
like brilliant noble gases fly
up to their maker; the damned,
aflame with diarrhoea, flash past
ice-cold roots as hard as iron
deeper in the ground:

they have seen it,
they have heard it,
they won’t take part.

Voortekenen

Peter Ghyssaert

Er waren voortekenen,
het kon niet blijven duren;
stelsels wentelden
verkeerde kanten op.

Er waren meer en meer
bekwame wichelaars
afgestudeerd.

Er was een onderwereld
van voorspellingen

en overal
was lijm en baard te koop
voor één profeet.

Portents

There were portents,
it just couldn’t last;
the systems revolved
in all the wrong directions.

There were more and more
resourceful diviners
to graduate.

There was an underworld
of prophesies

and all
sold glue and beard
for just one prophet.

Gravure

Peter Theunynck

Zoals mensen vliegen
in oude gravures, zo haarscherp
zo goedgelovig.

Tussen portretten van keizers
en soldaten, werveldieren en
walvissen, zo onweerlegbaar.

Hebben zij het later verleerd,
wegens te weinig veerkracht
in de vingers, te veel lood

in de vaders ? Zwaluwen
in afwachting, kwetterend
aan telefoondraden.

Engraving

The way people fly
in old engravings, so clear-cut
so credulous.

Between portraits of emperors
and soldiers, vertebrates and
whales, so irrefutable.

Did they lose the knack later on,
due to a loss of elasticity
in their fingers, too much lead

in their bloodline? Swallows
in waiting, chattering
on telephone wires.

Canadezen

Peter Theunynck

Mijn vader zei: hier liggen ze,
de Canadezen. Ik zag ze staan
aan de vaart, in hun grijze kleren.
Eindeloze, slachtrijpe rijen.

Man tegen man stonden ze:
een beetje wind en ze gingen.

Vrede. Aan beide kanten
Canadezen. Te lang in het land
om terug te keren. Te diep
in de grond om weg te marcheren.

Canadians

My father said: here they lie,
the Canadians. I saw them standing
by the canal, in their grey clothing.
Endless rows, fit for the slaughter.

Shoulder to shoulder, they stood:
the slightest wind and off they’d go.

In peace. Canadians on both
sides. Here for too long
to go back. Too deep
in the ground to march away.

Nijlpaarden

Peter Theunynck

Ze verblijven in paleizen langs de Seine.
Men verduistert voor ze vertrekken.
Men durft haast niet te kuchen, men
legt bergen statistieken van ze aan.

Ze zijn pijlen op verwijsbladen,
lemma’s in vierkleurengidsen, keien
in klaterende woordenstromen,

woestijnstormen, graven, oorlog
verdragen, doet hier niet ter zake.

Hippopotami

They reside in palaces along the Seine.
People dim their chambers’ lights.
People hardly dare to cough, people
gather heaps of statistics about them.

They are arrows on cross-reference cards,
lemmas in full-colour guides, pebbles
in the splashing streams of words,
a catch in an exam.

It is forbidden to touch them.
To wake them up. Don’t talk,
they only speak dead languages.

That they have passed through hands,
through desert storms and graves, endure
the wars, is not the point right now.

Tralies

Peter Theunynck

Don’t people just love bars

On that Friday in May - 25°C in the shade – the Frankfurt
gorilla makes a decision, yes sir, the Frankfurt Zoo
super-gorilla, without an escort, without permission:

«we’re good to go». He just does it. Past the gate. As fear.
It’s spattered everywhere. It jumps about like kangaroos!
Suddenly everyone a sloe, each heart jimbays to its nearest village.

With a handful of peanuts, by the skinny arm of a girl,
sixteen, from which boot did her heart rise up, back to the cage.
That’s quite enough. Why this outburst?

Sudden flood of people. All peeling off their shrubbery skin.
Walk out of bounds. Reveal their gleaming teeth. What an ordeal.
So cute, that helpless beast. Don’t people just love bars.

Translation: Willem Groenewegen, 2010.

Groen schopje

Peter Theunynck

Een groen schopje is mijn hond.
Ik houd het stevig in de hand.
Ik stop het zelden in mijn mond.
Een groen schopje is mijn hond.

Als ik slaap, slaapt het naast me.
Het geeft geen kik. Het graaft,
dat verbaast me, dieper dan ik.
Een groen schopje is mijn hond.

Het zwemt als een jachthond,
waakt als een herder. Nooit zet
het zonder mij één stapje verder.
Een groen schopje is mijn hond.

Wil iemand hem pijn doen
dan blaf ik voor hem, want
mijn arme hondje heeft geen stem.
Een groen schopje is mijn hond.

Little green spade

A little green spade is my hound.
I hold it tightly in my hand.
I hardly ever put it in my mouth.
A little green spade is my hound.

When I sleep, it sleeps beside me.
Without a sound. It digs,
to my surprise, far deeper than me.
A little green spade is my hound.

It swims as a gun dog,
guards as a sheepdog. Never
takes a jog without me.
A little green spade is my hound.

If someone wishes to hurt him
I bark for him by choice, because
my poor little dog has no voice.
A little green spade is my hound.

Verhuizen

Peter Theunynck

Removal

We carried a part of your life outside.
Piling up on the platform all you’d gathered
under our roof. It lay in ropes, in piles,
blindfolded in boxes: moving as much as possible

at once to a larger city where you’d live in smaller
rooms with stranger folk. No longer with us.
You said you’d often return. I knew how years
before I’d promised the same while lugging boxes,

but I saw the flicker of another life in your eyes,
in wider lanes with taller buildings, trees and terraces
in many languages. The golden years of conquest. Time
for us to empty out, let go, which always takes some doing.

We’d have to get by with less of you.

[Wat ik zo jammer vind]

Mark Insingel

Wat ik zo jammer vind
is wat er overblijft:
dat ik het jammer vind.

Dat ik niets anders vind
dan: dat wat overblijft
is wat ik niet meer vind.

Dat ik niet vind
van wat er overblijft
dan wat ik jammer vind.

Dat wat er overblijft
zo jammer is
dat ik het nergens vind.

Dat ik slechts vind
en overal
dat er niets overblijft.

Ooit was er alles,
ooit was alles goed,
ooit was het goede alles.

Liefste, nu is er niets,
versta me toch, alles
is goed behalve niets.

[What I find such a shame]

What I find such a shame
is what remains:
I find it such a shame.

That I find nothing else
but: what remains
is what I can no longer find.

That I find nothing
of what remains
but what I find a shame.

That what remains
is such a shame
that I can’t find it anywhere.

That I just find
and everywhere
that what remains is nothing.

Once there was everything,
once everything was good,
once the good was everything.

Darling, now there’s nothing,
please hear me, everything
is good apart from nothing.

[toestellen zijn nooit mijn sterkste kant geweest]

Bart Meuleman

[appliances have never been my strong point]

appliances have never been my strong point, I’ve always believed in
manual exchange of loss and pleasure, hate and sorrow, thought and death.
your life really brings a breath of fresh air.
the proper distortion of the facts, every day you breathe, the murmur
from your body.
it’s also the way you are, button on my finger, when you fall asleep, electric.
the tiredness, my dear, we must keep sharing it.

[toen kwam ik thuis]

[then I came home]

then I came home
I threw my heavy bag
off of me in the corridor
you stood waiting for me

those were steps
I made beside you on the ground
one by one
someone bombed the station

a Rumanian shot
another Rumanian with a gun
last year a man lay in this street
blood stayed behind on the pavement

before you leave I gaze after a tram driving away

without us nothing could begin
without us it everything’s been done

Mark Insingel

stond ze plots weer vóór me.
drukte haar heel hard tegen me aan.

[Although I’d long since stopped expecting her]

Although I’d long since stopped expecting her
she suddenly stood there before me.
(All that time she had still been what I desired.)
She smiled, as if she knew
I wouldn’t turn her down.
(All that time she’d been what I desired.)
I took her in my arms and
held her very tightly.
(For so long she was what I desired.)
Then she broke free, just laughed
at me – I failed to understand.
(As all that time she’d been what I desired.)
On my way here I thought, she said:
he’ll surely mistake my intentions
- all this time I’ve been what he desired!

[on the roof of the house with the wind vane]

on the roof of the house with the wind vane
a heron takes off on a steep incline
all the guests walk slowly to
the pond that is filled to the brim

this is an afternoon and it’s raining
windows become doors to step through
a dog chases after a child on the lawn
voices stay behind above the grass

the sound is muffled by the sound of the motorway

the man who went upstairs without asking is asleep
with his head deep in the pillows
at the party someone is being sick
at the party there’s always someone with a noose around his neck

the bin liner hangs from the door handle
a knife is stuck into the cake

[nacht was wapen...]

Tsead Bruinja

grommende bruinen brommende witten
heilig grijs brandend in woestijnblikken

onzichtbare marconisten stuurden onderhuidse berichten

het bleven prille antwoorden op schreeuwerige behoeftes
we gingen dieper
dieper

dieper

we namen posities in

[night was a weapon that brought us together...]

night was a weapon that brought us together
growling browns buzzing whites
holy grey burning in desert looks
we grabbed for tough infected tools

the moon was a clock behind swaying trees
the moon was a test card they knew by heart
she pushes sea out before her they say
she mixes swelter with storm they say

we took up positions I heard
breathing history rustle through instruments
invisible radio operators sending reports under the skin

they remained budding answers to blaring needs
we went deeper
deeper

if you look at snow for long enough your house will fly
if you listen to static for long enough you will believe
that there’s something alive down there deeper
deeper

we took up positions
like white pearls our bodies shot through the water

we’re not going in for procreation. you can ask me anything else.
what I have in mind should now be given a chance.
what do you think? in my heart I can’t be bad.
see, you already seem to be laughing a little.

[klachten bereiken mij niet]

Bart Meuleman

[complaints fail to reach me]

complaints fail to reach me
because I constantly need to squirt on the centrepiece,
on the centrepiece, need to squirt,
squirt, on the centrepiece,
on the centrepiece, squirt.

I heard someone ask what it was I did, between times.
squirt I said, on the centrepiece.
and when that’s done?
I said: squirt on the centrepiece.

[je vel wordt oud]

Bart Meuleman

[your flesh is ageing]

your flesh is ageing, how can I go on with you?
excrement is what you are, completely. it’s quite costly.
but look, look at your hands, you’re not bleeding anymore, while you were
once a pond.
you should let me be, I have a headache – that endless lighting never mind
what godforsaken hour of the day.
you’re really leaving. if I say now surroundings will vanish, quite gently,
then your likeness. press once more on the fleshy switch.

THE MAN WHO HAS TO MARCH

he is the man who has to march
has to march and march and march

so full of desire
and hooked on women
so blind to
how he is
doing dammit
that he has to walk
walk until he
grows transparent
and thin as air
sees his desire
be dissolved

he is the man who has to march
has to march and march and march

through the park
past the sandpit
through the sandpit
into the climbing frame
where he dreams
of deserts
tongue lizards
and drift sands
as thin as he
wants to be

he is the man who has to march
has to march and march and march

with his dream
his dream that no fence
could enclose

[Als ik de tijd dood pleeg ik]

Mark Insingel

Als ik de tijd dood pleeg ik
zelfmoord voor de spiegel.

Als ik betrapt kan
worden ben ik schuldig.
Als ik misverstand inroep
heb ik alibi's nodig.

Als ik moet zoeken
twijfel ik. Als ik
verplicht word te weten
heb ik vragen gesteld.

Als ik gezien ben kan
ik niet meer meespelen.
Als ik word uitgekleed
moet ik gewassen zijn.

Als ik met vechten op
houd trek ik een grens.

Als ik een grens
trek houd ik met vechten op.

Als ik moet gewassen
zijn word ik uitgekleed.
Als ik niet meer kan mee
spelen ben ik gezien.

Als ik vragen heb
gesteld word ik verplicht
te weten. Als ik twijfel
moet ik zoeken.

Als ik alibi's nodig
heb roep ik misverstand in.
Als ik schuldig ben
kan ik betrapt worden.

Als ik zelfmoord voor de
spiegel pleeg dood ik de tijd.

[If I kill time I’ll take]

If I kill time I’ll take
my life before the mirror.

If I can be

If I invoke mistrust

If I must search

obliged to know
I’ll have posed questions.

If I’ve given up

If I’m undressed
I will have washed.

If I stop fighting

If I draw the line

If I have washed

Onvoltooid

Charles Ducal

Soms, als ik zonder inhoud ben,
gebeurt het mij dat uit de menigte
op straat een lang gedoofde stem
weer opklinkt en mij gadeslaat.

Dan is het of ik ben verdwaald
en terug moet keren naar het huis
in zijn oorspronkelijke staat,
vóór het door mij werd opgeruimd.

Of uit de boekhouding, de vuilniszak
nog iets moet worden opgediept,
iets onverrekends, iets onafs,

zo onvoltooid. Maar teruggaan

doe ik nooit.

Incomplete

Sometimes, when I am empty,
it happens that a long forgotten voice
from the crowd in the street
arises again and finds me there.

Then it’s as if I’ve lost my way
and must return to the house
in its original state,
before I cleared it out.

As if from the accounts, the garbage
something has yet to be retrieved,
something unsettled, unmanaged,
that I left behind so I could leave.

Sometimes, when I am empty,
while ink is filling my eyes and voice
by surprise it brushes my ear lightly,
so incomplete. But to return

just isn’t me.

de witte fuckende konijnen

Els Moors

de witte fuckende konijnen fucken
en zij fucken samen het dak plat
zonder afstandsbediening
galm galm het is ochtend!
het is ochtend in dit natte land
dit tandpasta nutella land
dit natte afgematte veld

er staan drie camping caravans met
oranje gordijnen een uit zichzelf verschenen
flard mist trekt zijdelings het oog voorbij

*

vooral daar waar niemand hen vermoedt

the white shagging rabbits

the white shagging rabbits shag
and they raise the roof shagging together
and no remote control
echo echo morning has broken!
morning has broken in this wet land
this toothpaste and chocolate spread land
this wet and worn out field

there are three camping caravans with
orange curtains a wisp of fog having appeared
of its own accord passes sideways before my eyes

*

strange things happen in this house
where the walls don't want to be straightened out
 – don’t want to be straight –
man are sleeping in the bed
usually the door swings to by itself

*

in this footlight I search for the white shagging
rabbits emptiness stands up bier
one two three march let us move
together and not needlessly crack vertebrae
lay both hands around this brain and love it
we are homewards bound
to the white shagging rabbit

*

the old white shagging rabbit never did anything else but shag
it shagged and then it shagged and then it shagged some more
exactly so – it doesn’t cast a horny glance at this black-and-white
striped summer dress – the old white shagging rabbit blindly shags
an offspring ahead

*

the stork brings the child and sings
cheerful trees spin through the grass
this new life is a shag-rabbit
it shags and shags and shags

*

the white shagging rabbit shags jump-falling
while oysters are breaking on the scarlet bed
this is where I could be sticking my tongue in
fiery water or let it slip across the full surface
of his soles and store the better feeling

a body till it fits me

*

the white shagging rabbits live
below rusty church towers close to the place
‘do not dump waste’ they are sliding in and out of
one another especially there where nobody suspects them
they enclose the soft white pelt with their paws

*

one morning when I wake up
now beside the white shagging rabbits in the grass
the extended fields are barren still – bare –
is morning through the window

Het Varken

Charles Ducal

in onze heimelijkste droom.

Het woelt in draf en drek
de taal op die wij
met gewassen handen schrijven.

Kon een van ons het hoofd verliezen,
               wij zouden huilen, beiden,
               van bezetenheid.

The Pig

The pig lives on the other side
of love, low
to the ground of our loneliness.

It lays itself down lets itself be bitten
as the flesh that laughs
in our most secret of dreams.

It roots in muck and at a trot
the language that we
write with our hands washed.

If one of us were to lose his head,
we’d cry, the both of us,
as though possessed.

Bedrijf

Charles Ducal

Zolang de inkt nat is
ligt het bedrijf in de taal.

Een kraai speurt in de mestvaalt
als een vinger in een woordenboek.

Op het achtererf liggen begrippen
te roesten als moegeworden metaal.

De deur waar een stal in ontstaat
laat een geur los van oude gedichten.

In inktspatten zwermen de vliegen
boven de piepende kruiwagen uit.

De hand die gaat scheppen
woelt nog betekenisloos in het voer.

De ogen die wachten staan vochtig,
van honger ontroerd.

Farm

As long as the ink is wet
the farm stays in speech.

A crow searches the dunghill
as a finger browsing a dictionary.

In the backyard notions lay
rusting as fatigued steel.

The door in which a sty begins
gives off a smell of old poetry.

In ink splatters the flies swarm
out across the creaking barrow.

The hand that is about to dig
roots meaninglessly through the feed.

The waiting eyes look moist,
moved by hunger.

daar aan haar zongekleurde armen
bedelen kindmannen hangend

BUYING APPLES

sadness ripe and crumbling mirrors her
in the market salesman’s trays

delicate is she who loves apples
he sees that he sees her stubbornly

laughing about his sweet-n-sour jokes
he’d like to draw his jack-knife now

and show her both the rough pip halves
she’s doubtful for what seems a fruitless hour

in the nick of time she catches the last bus

when she goes off to the dancehall
she bears a basket laden with red cheeks

there on her sun-coloured arms
lean the childmen begging
to take waterfruit to roofhouse roof

but she goes there to dance
when she goes there
she goes there to dance

when she’s there everything starts to dance
a little gospel squeal may sail across
from the south of tobacco faraway america

my lockhips want to sway
attempt her emptiness
until I am broken by dawn
and she is asleep beside me again

Ach du…

Charles Ducal

Not to have to write it’s enough
to touch her imaginary shape.
It burns into the screen as onto a drape
and laughs at me, always willing. I let it

think and talk me round, page filling,
for which no poet is needed.
This numbness has gone unheeded
for years, excitement without meaning.

Perhaps I miss the misery of a room
in which the holes are sealed: the door
a writ, the window an ultimatum,
at table an uncompleted affidavit –

and nobody who in shameless pleasure
fills my aversion to write.
