I’m at the publishing company. My publisher asks when I’m finally going to write something new. I’m currently working on a book about poetry’s peace with time, I say. He laughs: I cannot wait
for your obituary.
Simple explanation: Above all mountain peaks is calm.
GERMAN STUDIES
The child in the Teuton
writes the poems,
says the tutor,
but why that’s so
we just don’t know.
Simple explanation: All old Teutons are tutors.
GREEK CRISIS
Athens has fallen. The Greeks are trembling in my room.
I’m scared too. Don’t worry about it, says the commentator,
this is a darling war.
Simple explanation: Everybody has a Greek at home.
FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS
Why does the dove drink from the bowl?
So that we don’t fall in the water.
Why all those fiddles overhead?
So that we don’t weep in bed.
Why does the wind blow in the trees?
So that apples populate our dreams.
Why is the table set?
So that we can see the knife.
Why is it that the box is empty?
So that we will reproduce.
Why is it that the snow is white?
So that we can bite the dust.
Why does the wolf eat the sheep?
So that we can get some sleep.
Why does the house have a roof?
So that we can keep on laughing.
Simple explanation: Questions keep us awake.
