Serhij Zhadan was born on August 23, 1974 in Starobilsk in the industrial region of Luhansk in the east of the former Soviet Republic of Ukraine. The family later moved to Kharkiv, where he studied German Language and Literature at the Pedagogical University. He wrote his PhD about the Ukrainian futurism.

He began publishing his first self-printed texts at the age of 17. Since 1991, Zhadan has been one of the most influential figures of the young poetry scene in Kharkiv, and today he is considered the virtuous enfant terrible of contemporary Ukrainian literature.

He made his debut in 1995 with the poetry collection Zytatnyk, which was followed by numerous other poetry collections, novels, stories, essays and plays; he also translates from Belarusian, German, Polish and Russian. His books have appeared in translation in Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden and the USA.

He has been Vice-President of the Ukrainian Writers' Union since 2000.
During the Orange Revolution, he was a commander of the tent campus in Kharkiv. In the aftermath of the Maidan protests and the war that took place first in eastern Ukraine and later throughout the country, he became politically and socially involved and also processed the war in literary form.

For his novel The Invention of Jazz in the Donbass, published in 2010 and voted "Book of the Decade" by the BBC, he received the Jan Michalski Prize for Literature and the Brücke Berlin Prize in 2014. For his novel "Internat", which deals with the war in eastern Ukraine, he was awarded the Prize of the Leipzig Book Fair in 2018.

Serhij Zhadan lives as an author, translator, activist and organiser of literary and cultural events in Kharkiv.
