Portuguese poet and fictionist, a career diplomat, Luís Filipe Castro Mendes was born in 1950. In 1974, he graduated in Law from the University of Lisbon. He began his diplomatic career in 1977. He was consul general in Rio de Janeiro, Ambassador of Portugal in Budapest, New Delhi, UNESCO-Paris and to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. He was Portugal’s Minister of Culture between 2016 and 2018.

He published his first book (Errands) in 1983, followed by Dark Sands (1984), Six Elegies and Other Poems (1985), The Isle of the Dead (1991), The Game of Making Verses (1994), Winter Trip (1993), Secret Correspondence (1995), Music Modes (1996), Other Songs (1998), The Invented Days (2001), Legends of India (2011), The Mercy of Markets (2014) and Another Ulysses returns home (2016). In 2018 he published an anthology of Collected Poems.

He has a collection of poems published in Brazil (Poemas Reunidos, 1999) and books translated to German (Fremde Nahe, 2018) and French (Légendes de l’Inde, 2020).
