Katalin Ladik (b. 1942 in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia) is a true multi-artist: poet, performer and actor. She works both with printed poems and with visual poetry, audio texts, prose, collages, photography and experimental music. Ladik has also appeared in a great many performances, happenings and theatre plays.
In her home country in the early Sixties she was a legendary and controversial figure with her feminist-shamanistic sound poems and nude performances. In her graphic scores and vocal compositions she dissects language into its component parts and explores them with visual and vocal approaches through movement and gestures. The astoundingly rich frequency range of her singing gave Ladik her reputation as a ‘Yoko Ono of the Balkans’.
For twenty years, Ladik has lived and worked alternately in Novi Sad (Serbia) and Budapest (Hungary) and on the island of Hvar (Croatia). Her shrill artistic work has garnered many awards, most recently the 2015 Klára Herczeg Prize, the 2016 Lennon-Ono Peace Prize and the 2017 Artisjus Literature Prize. She is a regular guest at international festivals and took part in documenta 14 in 2017.
