Josep Palau i Fabre was one of the representatives of a generation that includes writers such as Joan Brossa and Joan Perucho. Poetry was at the core ofPalau’s work although he was a writer and cultural activist. After the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) he became deeply involved with the recovery of the Catalan culture and literature: he was the creator and editor of the review Poesia and contributed with the review Ariel. In 1945 he went toPariswith a scholarship of the French Government and lived there for sixteen years. During his time inParishe was in contact with Antonin Artaud, Octavio Paz andPabloPicasso. He was also a playwright, a short fiction writer, a translator of French and Catalan and an essayist. He was considered to be one of the world’s leading experts on Picasso.

“I am from here, I am a stranger”, JosepPalauwrites in one of his poems. There is no doubt that his work is double rooted, both in the Catalan tradition but also in the European avant-garde. ForPalau, the poet is an alchemist who seeks to transform reality into something superior. In this quest,Palau’s models are Ramon Llull, Ausiàs March, the Majorcan poet Bartomeu Rosselló- Pòrcel who died prematurely at the age of 26 – and whose workPalaureinterpreted and kept alive – but also the founders of the Modern Movement as Arthur Rimbaud, Antonin Artaud andPabloPicasso.Palau’s poetry describes his quest and wishes to close the circle. The Alchemist’s Poems, the volume of his complete poetic works, was published in1952 inits definitive edition. His work has been translated to German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Serbo-Croatian, Swedish and Dutch. The Fundació Palau in Caldes d’Estrac (ProvinceofBarcelona) has exhibited and made available the artistic and documental legacy of this author.

Among other awards,Palaureceived the 1999 Award of Honour of les Lletres Catalanes (Premi d’Honor a les Lletres Catalanes) and the National Award of Literature (1996).
