Iryna Tsilyk (born in 1982 in Kyiv, Ukraine) studied at the Kyiv University for Theatre, Cinematography and Television and now works as a director. She writes poems, songs, prose texts and books for children and her works have been translated into several languages including English, German, Swedish, Czech and Polish. Her first poetry book »Qi« (This) came out in 2007. Iryna Tsilyk is also a songwriter for various Ukrainian bands and musicians, such as Sestri Telnjuk and Kozak System. Her song lyrics have been nominated for the Ukrainian Literature Competition prize. In 2011 she was awarded the Coronation of word prize. She also won the award presented at the Ukrainian literature festival Molode Vyno in 1999 and 2001 and both the Grand Prix and the public choice award at Pidkowa Pegasa, another Ukrainian literature festival.

Tsilyk wrote and directed the short films »Wdosvita« (2008; Eng. »Blue Hour«, 2008), »Pomyn« (2012; Eng. »Commemoration«, 2012) and »Dim« (2016; Eng. »Home«, 2016). She directed two documentaries for the film almanac “The Invisible Battalion” about Ukrainian women at war (2017). Her full-length documentary “The Earth Is Blue As an Orange” about civilians living in the red zone of Donbas premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2020 and won her the “Directing Award: World Cinema Documentary”.

Iryna Tsilyk lives in Kyiv together with her husband, writer Artem Chekh, and their son.
