Gonca Özmen was born in Burdur (southern Turkey) in 1982. She graduated with a degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Istanbul in 2004. In 2008 she completed her M. A. and is now a Ph.D student at the same department.

Her first poem was published in 1997 when she was fifteen years old, and in the same year she was awarded the prize of ‘the most promising talent’ at the Yaşar Nabi Nayır Youth competition. She was awarded with the Ali Rıza Ertan Poetry Prize in 1999.

Her first poetry book Kuytumda (In My Nook) was published in 2000 and awarded with the Orhon Murat Arıburnu Poetry Prize. She won the Berna Moran Poetry Prize, awarded by Istanbul University, in 2003. Her essay about the Turkish poet, Edip Cansever, was awarded with the 2005 Homeros Criticism Prize. Her second book Belki Sessiz (Maybe Quiet) was published by Yapı Kredi Publishing House in February 2008.

Gonca Özmen has been a contributor to several different literature magazines since 1997. Nowadays she concentrates on translating, and is currently setting up a magazine of literary translation called Ç. N. (Çevirmenin Notu) with her friends. She is the editor of a monthly literary magazine called ‘Palto’.

She has participated in international poetry readings in Turkey, Heidelberg, Hamburg, Paris and Slovenia and her poems have been translated into Spanish, French, English, German, Slovenian and Persian.

Gonca Özmen has lived in Istanbul since 2000.
