Gennadij Ajgi was born on the 21st August 1934 in the village of Shaimurzino (Chuvash Republic), the son of a village teacher, who taught Russian and translated Pushkin's poetry into Chuvash (a Turkic language spoken in central Russia, primarily in the Chuvash Republic). In 1953 Ajgi became a student at the Moscow Literature Institute and three years later was barred from the same institute for having written 'a book of poetry that was hostile to the State, and that undermined the basic principles of Socialist Realism'. From 1961 to 1971 he worked as an archiver in the Majakowski State Museum. Ajgi lived in Moscow as a freelance author from 1971 onwards, and died on 21st February 2006 in a hospital in Moscow, at the age of 71.

Ajgi wrote primarily in the Chuvash language, and translated the works of Majakowski, Chlebnikov, Mandelshtam and Pasternak into his mother tongue. Following advice he received from Pasternak, Ajgi began to write solely in Russian after 1960. Since 1962 his poems and books have been translated into numerous languages, and published both inside Europe, and further afield. Ajgi's first Russian-language book appeared in Munich in 1975 and his first Russian-language book to be published in his homeland came out in Moscow in 1991.

With his translations and anthologies, Ajgi has been responsible for introducing world poetry to Chuvash culture, and at the same time, bringing Chuvash culture to the world.

Gennadij Ajgi has won, among other prizes, the Konstantin Iwanov Prize (1990) and the Petrarca Prize (1993), and in France in 1998 he was granted the title of 'Officier de l'ordre des arts et de la littérature'. In the year 2000, on the occasion of the PEN World Congress, Ajgi won the Pasternak Prize.
