The performance artist, author and musician Arnaldo Antunes (*1960, São Paulo/Brazil), is most notable for the sheer diversity of his work. As well as writing poetry, Antunes paints, organises exhibitions and publishes art magazines. From 1982 to 1992 he was a member of the band Titãs, one of Brazil's most successful bands, and a group whose work had a massive influence on Brazil's burgeoning music scene. In 1993 he made his solo debut with the multimedia project Nome, that was released as a book, video, and CD, and brought together poetry, music, and computer animation. In the same year, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil set Antunes' poem As coisas to music.

Antunes: 'In primitive societies there is no division between life and art. The distinction was first made by civilisation: Music is made to be listened to, literature is there to be read. But now modernity has mixed things up again. We are starting to see visual works that use the spoken word, and also more performance poetry. The formal order of things has been re-arranged, and this has brought together low and high culture, erudition and kitsch. I've always preferred to be at one of these extremes, never middle of the road'.

Tribalistas (2002), the album that he made with Marisa Monte and Carlinhos Brown, was awarded a Latin Grammy, and reached Number 1 in the Italian and Portuguese charts. He continues to release solo albums, and make guest appearances with other musicians, as well as publishing books. An anthology of his selected works, Como É que Chama o Nome Disso, was published in 2006.
