APTEST EVE

Somewhere on the planet it was midnight.
	Someone was using her mouth

to say the word mouth. Someone else
was looking at the sky not listening

to the palm trees calling from the shore.
Such a beautiful day for a tragedy

said the statue too softly to hear
	above summer, humming to herself

between the leaves. A map of the world
floated by, singed at the edge**********s,

	flapped once above the pond
	***and disappeared beyond the rooftops
	*
	**************************trailing a handful of
ash. A green light
lit us. Alas & alack as our mothers would say.

Whither & wherefore we knew not.
